Status: offline 		Does proper English(American English) trump over Britssh styled English or are they second fiddle to ebonics hooked on phonics
slang style English

Now will this thread be enflamed or lead to flames who knows but not who know sbut why?

trump over ebonics slanged English


I royally think that English is suhect to ones taste palate

Status: offline 		Accent wise, I love the Californian American accent. Or I love the Canadian Accent. Actually, you put a Californian and a Canadian side by side, I can't tell the difference in their accent, it sounds exactly the same to me. Which is weird, since they are so far from each other. I am sure within California there are different nuances as well. But I always mistake a Canadian as an American. Can't tell the difference.

I think while Britain has alot of slang, locally used, but all of them know how to speak proper English when speaking to for example someone like me who won't understand their slang.

I think generally most English speakers have their own slang depending on where they come from, but are all capable of switching to normal English with someone else who speaks English, but they know how to speak in the Common English everyone understands.

I see this very clearly, like my Yorkshire friend, when I visited him, when he speaks to me, his diction is so clear and he even speaks slower. I understand him perfectly. Then he brings me to go meet his friends at a Pub and once they start talking to each other. It's like they are speaking English, but I totally catch no ball. His accent completely got thicker.

Status: offline 		Ebonics...not discovered till the 90s and not used before.
Vernacular and slang is not proper english.
I use slang, I use vernacular, I have an accent, I have a dialect. Ebonics doesnt come into English english before the 90s and its still mostly an american frame of african american slang.

Status: offline 		As someone for whom English was the third language I often wonder about how low the standard of English among native speakers appears to be.

I know learning English spellings for a school child is a nightmare but one should gain experience by reading, writing asf over a lifetime - but sticking to mistakes like "dominate" for "dominant" like frequently seen around here is simply odd. Those people would fail a TOEFL test (Test of English as a foreign language)

American English as opposed to British English - well listening to some Hollywood productions makes one think of either gobbledigook or cats brawling - in my opinion it is not a matter of majorities, or how many twist their tongues in what ways, but by all means to avoid sounding like scratching chain saws

About the oddest thing I ever heard is American tv networks overdubbing BBC productions and replacing top British speakers (like Kenneth Branagh) with American ones - no wonder American children obviously do no longer hear how English sounds like

Status: offline 		Hollywood and entertainment executives think everyone has a vanilla, whitebread, mainstream accent in the U.S. And that is what is fed to viewers from other countries. Most in the U.S. would fail the TOEFL as it tests for a version of English that only really exists in academia.

I find dubbing BBC stories to be totally irritating. But, my aunt is one of those that needs the dubbing of BBC stories with American English. She can't even understand the accents on Dr. Who.

There are many accents and dialects in the U.S. you will never see on television. Pidgin Gullah, Field hand Mushmouth, Haitian Creole, Acadian (or Cajun) is a rather odd mishmash of English, French, Spanish, and Choctaw with a heavy seasoning of Ashanti loan words. The "southern drawl" is one I think is driven by climate. When the temperature and humidity are running neck and neck for a new Guinness record; "ya just cain't tawlk no faster". If you are around the Plain Folk you get accustomed to English spoken with a Deutsch syntax. (reminds me of Yoda sometimes) You really need to be a Henry Higgins to catch all the differences. Sometimes, what you hear is not what was said. i.e. "You wan' yo sammich dressed?" - Do you want lettuce, tomato, and condiments on your sandwich? "Give it a tuxedo" or "Make it formal" will get everything on your sandwich.


Cultural differences in the U.S. obscure communication too. In parts of the country; "barbecue" is what you cook on in the back yard. Other places, "barbecue" is what you cook on the grill with some huge regional variations on how it is done.

Despite decades of attempts to homogenize the U.S.; it remains a mixture of wildly varying cultures. A lot of the political conflict in the U.S. is driven by one culture trying to forces its customs on others that just don't want what is being sold as an improvement.

I was in Mexico one time, with a Mexican friend who had spent many years in the US and was completely fluent in English. We were at the beach, and another woman came over to us to talk with us about something that we had all just witnessed. She happened to be British. She and I talked for a few minutes, and then she walked away. At that point, my friend said that the only reason she knew for sure that the British woman was speaking English was because I was replying to her in English. With the accent, she might as well have been speaking Greek, in terms of what my friend could comprehend.

Status: offline 		Apparently im from new york....because i say cot and caught are pronounced differently...weird. Of course being english, the words used for things like highway, parkway, Ive only picked up since Ive been in canada.

so If I'm a Rapper/poet who could easily say eat your heart out Eminem Lil Wayne Jay Z Nicki Minaj and I use ebonics and slang to
create a Masterpiece or Masterpieces should I be sent back to school to learn that use of the English language is vital in society
or would flashing some cash do all the talking when I need to talk to folk who speak proper English gramtical English or English in
terms of communicatipn between Brits Americans and Foriegners

It hit pretty close for me. One of the results was on the GA/AL line, another was Montgomery, which I have lived within an hour of for the last 35 years. The third result was the general area that I spent my first 10 years.
