Well, I'm about to say a bunch of things you won't like. We as a society have had the concept of the low fat, thermogenic diet rammed down our throats until we've Stockholm Syndromed and started parroting back. The cholesterol and fat myth was based on a lie because a scientist wanted his name known. When a politician wanted the low fat diet pushed in the 60's he refused to listen to doctors who said it wasn't right...he kept looking until he found one that would agree with him. Thus replacing the "reduced carb" concept that had been around for centuries (there is a medical book that mentions reducing starch intake in the early 1800s) We now have a society that has a carb addiction and metabolic issues. On top of that, the official rates say that at least 10% of the female population, like me, has PCOS which brings with it endocrinic issues. These respond to the reduced carb way but in some twist of pop culture, low carb got labeled as a "fad diet" when in fact the thermogenic/low fat diet is the younger of the two. I was lucky, when I was 20 or so and allowing Susan Powter to kill me...I found a doctor against the low fat diet. He introduced me to reduced carb lifestyle and it changed my life. The reality is that if you have metabolic syndrome whether induced by the government's skewed concept of a diet or it comes from medical reasons......the gym isn't going to help. Until you've had a weight problem that is unresponsive to the thermogenic/low fat diet...you have no idea what it's like to deal with the people that tell you to "just eat less and exercise". You have no idea what it's like to be viewed as a failure because you haven't managed to lose weight, even though the diet set you up to fail. So, yeah.....you preaching at them won't do anything except cause a rift and make them feel crappy. If you really want to be helpful - suggest they see a doctor for blood tests to see if they have thyroid problems, PCOS or insulin resistance. Hook them up with someone that understands what they're going through. And I'll close with....I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a plastic spoon than go to the gym. I'd rather spend those hours out on the motorcycle doing something that I find fun.
