As promised, here it is. I have posited this to several scientifically illiterate RW brietfart lovers and they had No argument. I have also posited it to several of my tree hugging leftie friends and they were dumbfounded that it was so fucking simple. Here it is. Petroleum is finite. Petroleum is necessary as an industrial feedstock to maintain civilization. The planet is going toward renewable (non petroleum) energy one way or another. It has started and it will not stop. We have 2 choices. We can lead the charge or we can let someone else do so. If we lead the charge, within a generation, our nation will once again be the industrial and intellectual center of the planet. Thousands of AMERICAN millionaires will be created and tens to hundreds of thousands of AMERICAN jobs will be created. If we sit back and let someone else lead, your grandchildren will be taking mandatory Chinese language lessons beginning in first grade and instead of reading from the Bible, they will be reading from the writings of Mao Tse Tung. Anyone have a coherent argument? It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter whether it is warming, cooling or staying the same. It doesn't matter whether we are causing some of it, all of it or none of it. It doesn't fucking matter. What are we gonna do? Lead or have our ass owned.

Only because of the nuclear waste which remains radioactive for thousands of years. I don't deny the benefit of nuclear, in fact I think it's great, but unless we come up with suitable ways of storing or disposing of spent nuclear fuel then there will always be a risk.

your entire premise rests on the veracity of petroleum being a finite resource. im far from a geology expert, but it seems debatable as to whether or not that's true. there seems to be plenty of folks who think it isn't.

Shell oil just found tons of deposits in the arctic. Oh no, hang on they havent. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34377434 Royal Dutch Shell has stopped Arctic oil and gas exploration off the coast of Alaska after "disappointing" results from a key well in the Chukchi Sea. In a surprise announcement, the company said it would end exploration off Alaska "for the foreseeable future". Shell said it did not find sufficient amounts of oil and gas in the Burger J well to warrant further exploration. The company has spent about $7bn (£4.5bn) on Arctic offshore development in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. "Shell continues to see important exploration potential in the basin, and the area is likely to ultimately be of strategic importance to Alaska and the US," said Marvin Odum, president of Shell USA. "However, this is a clearly disappointing exploration outcome for this part of the basin." 'Risky endeavour' Lord Browne, former BP boss and government adviser, told the BBC that the Arctic "is a very risky place [to explore] and very expensive to develop, so there are probably easier places to go". Indeed some analysts suggested Shell might give up on the Arctic completely. "It is possible that Shell might almost be relieved as they can stop exploration for a legitimate operational reason, rather than being seen to bow to environmental pressure," Stuart Elliott from energy information group Platts told the BBC. "With the oil price around $50 a barrel, it was a risky endeavour with no guarantee of success. "You could argue that this has been bad for Shell's reputation and it wouldn't be a big surprise if they abandoned Arctic drilling altogether."

NASA has found hydrocarbons in large quantities on one of Saturn's moons. It could be that hydrocarbons are more mineral in nature and the heat and pressures of the planet make oil. The theory has been around a while but evidence is starting to back the theory up. Also there are many technical publications on this subject at www.gasresources.net

Personally,I think we've been looking at our own shit all wrong,literally. We now have the ability to turn our waste water into fuel..Think about that for a second,sewage is something that we're already having to collect manage and deal with in some way regardless of our energy needs,but now we have the "technology"(algae,yeah,not exactly high tech)to turn our boom booms into zoom zoom.Fuck having to dig for it or worry bout another off shore disaster.We would no longer have to import another drop of oil from some shit hole country,we have plenty of our own shit thank you(fun lil side note,the UAE grew so large so quickly,that they had no time/fore sight to develop a sewage system,subsequently they have a daily convoy of hundreds of trucks deport their shit hourly for them). No pipe lines since each region of the USA has it's own Rich Supply of "Texas brown Bum Tea".I think it's about time we get our shit together..

And speaking of getting back to basics and getting our shit together,FUCK NUCLEAR POWER!!!! Even if we did have a viable solution for the waste problem(which we fucking don't,not even close),there's a whole list of other negatives to go with it. Ever hear of natural disasters,of course you have,they've been around alot longer then we have and will be around long after we're all worm food.What's worse then a natural disaster,a natural disaster taking out a nuclear plant with it.You'll never see people freaking out over a wind storm pulling up a bunch of solar panels or ripping up a wind farm cause it's nothing more then an expensive nuisance,the same can't be said for nuclear power plants which oh by the way,HAVE TO BE LOCATED NEAR LARGE BODIES OF WATER!!Ya know,that substance we all need to live,yeah,lets put the potentially hazardous man made facility right next to our most essential resource,I'm sure that won't have devastating repercussions that will last for generations after generations after generations after generations..... Ever hear of human error,of course you have.People have been fucking up for as ling as human beings have existed.To error is to be human,but even the dirtiest most mismanaged coal plant didn't have to be incased in cement to keep the surrounding hundreds of miles from becoming a barren dead zone for hundreds of years. Ever hear of point of use solar,cause it's what we all should be using.Advances in solar make Nuclear more and more obsolete,and hopefully by the time we find an actual viable solution for our nuclear waste problem,we'll have found a way to not creat any in the first place.(check out http://www.rawlemon.com A simple innovation ,but damn is it effective)
