Any member of the public can't walk into a classroom, for example, simply because something is a "public" university. You need to be someone who has chosen to attend and agreed to abide by that institution's rules.

Same for the dorms. It's not public housing.

Do I wave a flag? Not normally.

Once again you are a lying little lifer pogue. You are constantly wrapping yourself in the flag and "waving the bloody shirt" as if the u.s. in general and you in particular are under attack on a daily bassis. This is just one more of your "patriotic frenzied foot stampings"

I should think, as usual, you are full of shit.
This does not give them a right to put up the army flag or the coast guard flag.

SEC. 3. RIGHT TO DISPLAY THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES.

A condominium association, cooperative association, or residential real estate management association may not adopt or enforce any policy, or enter into any agreement, that would restrict or prevent a member of the association from displaying the flag of the United States on residential property within the association with respect to which such member has a separate ownership interest or a right to exclusive possession or use.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/109/hr42/text

I believe that students have use of their rooms and balconey's Thus meeting the requirements of Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005. Section 4 does give some relief to both parties.

You are incorrect. There is no ownership interest by the tenants and school dorms are none of the above.

I disagree

1 - It is a public university and the individuals are members of the public, thus an extremely minute ownership trail can be made. Not a real good argument tho.

2 - You forgot the "OR" clause. Please don't read it as and. I didn't create it but that is the will of two branches of government (legeslative and executive)

Your 'public property' argument could be made for me to drop in on the White House and fly a confederate battle flag. It's residential property and I have that same miniscule ownership that the students do as their University dorm.

I bet you'd pay to see that huh? [8D]

FR

Discussing the controversial modern governor's mansion (promptly sold by the next administration) that the Reagans built in California, Joan Didion wrote, "It is the kind of house in which one does not live, but there is no way to say this without getting into touchy and evanescent and finally inadmissible questions of taste, and ultimately of class."

I think some of that may be going on at SDSU. I'd bet the rent that the real reason behind the ban on is to prevent people from making the building look trashy by hanging towels, laundry, WWE banners, sheets spray-painted with fraternity logos, rainbow flags, Grateful Dead farewell tour flags, Mexican flags, Confederate flags, batiks, and God knows what else. The blanket prohibition spares everyone from touchy and tedious discussion of what's "tasteful" and/or "appropriate." Of course one can't say that, especially when the item in question is Old Glory. Hence the blather about safety.

I understand wanting an exception for the Stars and Stripes, but (as others have pointed out) the guys moved into a place with clear rules. Making a federal case now because the rules are being enforced seems like a bid for those 15 minutes everyone seems to crave.

All that said, expulsion strikes me as a bit harsh. A more apt response might be to tell the guys to move out if they can't abide the house rules. Of course, we don't know what went on before the media showed up. Were there warnings? Discussions?

Didion again: "I have seldom seen a house so evocative of the unspeakable."

Agreed.

You are welcome to come to my home and look for all the flags that I don't wave. Please come unannounced. I'll keep my dog on safety before you pass thru the gate.

I'd support it, but not pay to watch. But remember there is a "use" clause that might get in the way. So I suggest that you do it during the public tour.
