FR Discussing the controversial modern governor's mansion (promptly sold by the next administration) that the Reagans built in California, Joan Didion wrote, "It is the kind of house in which one does not live, but there is no way to say this without getting into touchy and evanescent and finally inadmissible questions of taste, and ultimately of class." I think some of that may be going on at SDSU. I'd bet the rent that the real reason behind the ban on is to prevent people from making the building look trashy by hanging towels, laundry, WWE banners, sheets spray-painted with fraternity logos, rainbow flags, Grateful Dead farewell tour flags, Mexican flags, Confederate flags, batiks, and God knows what else. The blanket prohibition spares everyone from touchy and tedious discussion of what's "tasteful" and/or "appropriate." Of course one can't say that, especially when the item in question is Old Glory. Hence the blather about safety. I understand wanting an exception for the Stars and Stripes, but (as others have pointed out) the guys moved into a place with clear rules. Making a federal case now because the rules are being enforced seems like a bid for those 15 minutes everyone seems to crave. All that said, expulsion strikes me as a bit harsh. A more apt response might be to tell the guys to move out if they can't abide the house rules. Of course, we don't know what went on before the media showed up. Were there warnings? Discussions? Didion again: "I have seldom seen a house so evocative of the unspeakable."
