There are many choices to consider depending on the likely range you might encounter a dangerous animal such as a bear. Up close within less than 50 yards, a .44 magnum handgun is a gun is a good choice. You can draw and aim it quickly plus it's easy to carry. Another choice is pepper spray. I carry it for black bears when I'm out walking my dogs. We have one that frequents the neighborhood where I live. Within 20 feet it will stop a bear and I'm sure a wolf as the shit works well on visious dogs too. I carry a magnum canister that sprays a wide fog out to 20 feet. I'm convinced that FOX brand pepper spray is the very best. Google it to learn more and pick a canister that suits your needs. The downside to a pepper spray fogger is if it's too windy and you have to shoot up wind, yer fucked. Potent pepper spay has been known to stop a charging grizzly.

I have read where forest rangers say that pepper spray will only make a bear mad. And you are correct, at close range a .44 mag is as lethal as a 30/30.

I bought some bear spray at a mountain store in Idaho for when I was fishing mountain lakes and streams. It makes me quite nervous when carrying a string of trout back to my vehicle or down a trail and run into a set of fresh bear tracks. All I had at the time was .357 - 158 grain hollow points in my 6 shooter, probably adiquet but certainly not optimal. The bear spray was possibly a better option as it shoots up to 23 feet in a cone shape fog. The FOX spray I have (another fogger) is some real nasty stuff. It doesn't shoot quite that far but it's more potent than my bear spray. I tested these on myself by doing a short test burst and taking a tiny amount on my finger off the board I shot at and dabbing it about an inch or so under one eye. That FOX shit is the nastiest stuff I have ever tested. A tiny amount under the eye burns like a bitch.

Most likely a bear will run from you, grizzly and polar bears not included, yet, if you're familiar with bears, we all know they're unpredictable, especially when you smell like fish. I would hate to startle one in close proximity holding the leashes on two dogs, freaking pandemonium. If a bear thinks he's cornered, he will likely attack.

I'm glad to see you have a sense of humor.

I didn't know you had bears in Florida. I'm used to the bear population being more in the northern regions. More like places that snow in the winter.

Oh, we got the serious wildlife lecture when we got stationed in AK. Yes, once they have been in the trash, even if they don't find anything edible, if they smell food, they keep coming back hoping there will be food. Even things like chewing gum wrappers or empty soda cans. Once they smell that sweet, they are coming back.

He is dealing with black bears, you with brown, totally different beast.
I used to work for a hunting "club" as a telemarketer (we all have dark things in our past but I had to eat) and talked to this woman from the north east. Maine or NH. Her husband was from France and as soon as he became a citizen and could do so he bought a gun (mainly because he grew up in a place where they were taboo so he thought it would be cool). She was putting food out on the poarch for a black bear that wandered around the area. She thought bears were herbavoirs. She was also afraid that her husband might kill the bear with her .22 rifle. I did my best to educate her about what was going to happen when she didn't have food out there and what would happen if he shot the bear with a .22. She was shocked.

Read today that the mother and son both had Asperger's. She and her son were both gun enthusiasts, and oddly the father (divorced) knew nothing about this. The mother had feared the government taking her guns away, and the father (after the shooting) lamented the need for stricter gun-laws.

In a vivid description of the attack unfolding, it was reported that a neighbor alerted the mother to a shooting at the college -- so that the mother could maybe protect or warn her child about it. Then the police came and informed her that her son was the shooter, which she initially said could not be the case.

To me this is a text book example of gun-angst. The mother was knowledgeable about guns and seemingly responsible about them. She was also eager to protect her home. All her efforts and hopes were undone by unintended consequences.

Nothing in your theory explains him targeting people of faith. It looks more like a textbook case of an anti religious bigot getting rid of the people he hated.

PS the father is English so he gave the typical English knee jerk reaction acording to his upbringing. What would you expect, that he would stand of there and say that his son was some kind of monster.
