A group of haters of Pierre-Auguste Renoir gathered yesterday outside the gates of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts to declare publicly their utter contempt for the work of the renowned Impressionist master.

According to the Boston Globe, the group of protesters, which included a Harvard academic, sported signs that read "God Hates Renoir" and "Re-NO-ir," and chanted derisive slogans, such as "Put some fingers on those hands!," "Give us work by Paul Gauguin!," and "Other art is worth your while! Renoir paints a steaming pile!"

For years, I thought I was alone in considering Renoir too chocolate boxy for my taste. I wouldn't say I go as far as hating his work, but he's not my favorite.

I do think it's hilarious that folks actually did this, and I particularly like the Westboro spoof.

The protest has been organized by Max Geller, the brain behind the Instagram account Renoir Sucks at Painting, with the solid goal of making the museum de-install the works by Renoir they have on view and replace them with what he and his fellow haters deem as better, more suitable art.

Well I'm going the other way on this one. The museum should de-install Renoir because they don't like him? So fuck people who do? They want "more suitable art"? Where have I heard that before? Yeah, no. These people need something to occupy their attention. Hemorrhoids would be appropriate.

Whenever I get to the Metropolitan Museum (about once a decade these days), I make a special trip to greet Mme Charpentier and her children. The Renoir in which they dwell was the favorite painting of a dear, departed friend.

I like the fact that Renoir's great, great grand daughter is now starting her own Instagram account promoting him.

And chocolate boxy is a great description. But I have to admit to liking his work.

I just happen to love all impressionists. They were able to create works of art that speak to me (Irises by Von Gogh is one of my favorites and Monet is another favorite artist). If there are any 'postcards' of the works, I would love to order them and put them on the bedroom wall (if my ribbons allow it).

When I was a teen the Carnegie Art Museum in Pittsburgh had free admission. We'd take the bus to the Carnegie Library to do our research for papers for school. When we were done we were free to roam the Art and Natural History Museums that were attached to the library. I visited my favorite painting weekly, Young Girl in Pink by Renoir. However, I loved all the paintings from the old masters to Grandma Moses.

So sad that today's kids will never have access to all those things with the ease I had. After 45 years I can still picture in my mind my favorite exhibits as I saw them weekly. Besides the art museum there were exhibits of Egypt, American Indians, birds of the world, and architecture to name a few. It now costs $20 to get into the museums.

Impressionism was born because Monet was a realist; he just painted what his nearsighted eyes saw. <grin>

That is so cool!

Dueling Instagram accounts on the merits of fine art: gives a guy hope. [:)]

Renoir can't paint.

The Beatles were mediocre.

Ban books.
