22 wounded, 5 of them critically.

Smart kid who pulled the fire alarm.

But since your OP title is clearly aimed at some bizarre defense of the gun culture -- yep. 22 wounded. Not 22 dead.

Where is the left on Knife Control. Knives are considered arms under the 2nd amendment also aren't they?

Musicmystery -> RE: Thank God...he only had a knife (10/10/2015 12:43:28 PM)

And we also regulate them:

Not like we do guns. I can open carry a 14 inch bowie with no problems. When is the last time you needed an ok from the Federal government to buy a knife?

And yet...somehow, he got his hands on two of them.

So were cannons.

From the OP's link:

When [Dr. Chris] Kaufman, [director of trauma at Forbes Regional Medical Center,] was asked what the scene could have been like if the weapon was a gun, he didn't shy away from painting a much more grisly scene.

“The bullets would have gone through the patients and more people would have been injured and the bleeding would have been more severe," he said.

That said, this situation was truly horrific. But I don't see how it lessens the horror of other massacres, whether by gun or bomb or pressure cooker.

This line of "argument," which always seems to surface after any shooting tragedy, strikes me as akin to saying we shouldn't address AIDS because people might get herpes instead.

I open carry my 36" blade all the time. The only time it has been a problem was at a Renn Faire and I had to tie it with a piece of weak string and a bow knot. Like that will really help.

At that length, is it a knife or a sword?

And where do you live, if you don't mind my asking?

JVoV -> RE: Thank God...he only had a knife (10/10/2015 2:06:42 PM)

Metal detectors at schools would prevent students from bringing in guns or knives.

So if someone can do all this with just a knife ... what's the point in carrying guns? Well done, CD - I see your anti-gun argument here entirely. [:)]

Exactly. So, let's ignore the CRIMINAL element (AIDS) with guns, let's go after the law-abiding element (herpes) by adding more gun laws for them to follow. After all, the law-abiding (herpes) are so much easier to deal with than the CRIMINAL element (AIDS) and non-enforcement issues.

I don't believe that there is any intent to say this lessens the horror of other incidents.
It is just an attempt to bring the phobia some people have regarding firearms into light.
Pro gunners don't dismiss the horror of Oregon but gun aphobes poo poo anything that doesn't involve a gun.

Can you offer some real-life examples of that?

I don't recall anyone's pooh-poohing 9/11 or Oklahoma City, for instance.

Look at the start of this thread where we were that there would be 22 dead if he had had a gun.

Hmm. Your use of the simile doesn't make sense. Why is AIDS criminal when herpes isn't? Both are major health woes.

Your use of this 2014 incident, moreover, seemed to be an effort to underscore that there can be a "CRIMINAL element" in nongun as well as gun crimes. Fair enough. The assailant in this story was taken away in shackles, so who's arguing that we should ignore the "CRIMINAL element" when it uses weapons other than guns?

Given that we'd been discussing shootings, what was your point in bringing this vintage knife fight to the table anyway?

dcnovice -> RE: Thank God...he only had a knife (10/10/2015 4:00:19 PM)

Not sure a Collarchat post is much of a "real-life example," but I looked through the thread.

Who was pooh-poohing the attack? MM noted, exactly as the doctor in the OP's link did, that the carnage might have been far worse with a gun. And Peon was darkly sarcastic. But nobody came anywhere near saying that this horror--or 9/11 or Oklahoma City or the Boston Marathon--was other than awful.

They do insist that we take measures against guns, and not the causes of violence.
They insist that gun grabbing will solve things when all it would do (for the sake of argument lets assume it would work) would be take away one of many tools.
They insist that mental health is a red herring, when it is a root problem.
They pretend that people wouldn't turn to something else which could be even worse if they couldn't get guns.
They insist that the 21.000 suicides with firearms wouldn't happen or would be reduced substantianally if there were no guns, but Japan without guns has a higher suicide rate than we do, by far.
They refuse to look at the total picture and are myoptically focused on guns, guns, and only guns.
They dismiss every study that shows a minimun of 5 crimes stopped with a gun for everyone committed with a gun.
