The alpha is the primary slave, usually the one who was first in a relationship with the Master.

The beta is the second slave... usually brought in later.

It has been said that there is no difference in terms of importance and value in these roles, but.. that is not what I have personally experienced... perhaps that is how it is supposed to work out in the text books.

By definition it is contrary to say that the beta would have equal value or importance as compared to the alpha.

Alpha... is the primary to another... when this person comes into another's life is an irrelevant issue.  However, in most cases the alpha is usually the first in the relationship.

Beta is Secondary in the relationship.  Secondary means having less value and importance in the relationship.  As stated, most cases this person is second into the relationship.

I have two slaves (alandra and kyra)... Both are Alpha's to me.  I would say that denika my bottom is a secondary relationship and therefore a beta to me.

I would add that there is a situation that exists between alandra and kyra where alandra is the alpha.  This is with regards to the littleones of the house.  In most other cases that I see between them alandra seems to take a beta role with kyra.  There relationship is evolving naturally and I don't enforce my will that would cause me to push water up hill.  I observe how they are developing together.  They are my Alpha's but they are also deciding between themselves the heirarchy in the various situations in our life.  The manner that the two of them have effectively and successfully worked together is in my opinion the primary reason why our poly relationship is working.  In my relationship with them... there is no question who is alpha.  but between them it is very much like a mainstream married couple that are learning the power dynamics between them.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Alpha and Beta ?! (7/18/2006 11:07:09 PM)

This is the way I've explained it.  The alpha is a slave, and, like any other slave, has no rights.  The only difference between an alpha and any other slave is that the alpha has been given the authority by her master to speak for him when he is not present.  The beta does not have that authority.  That doesn't mean the alpha is better, more important, or more loved than the beta; it just means that the master has chosen her to speak for him when he is not present to speak for himself.
