MrRodgers -> Yea, Red states...de-regulate !! (10/16/2015 10:43:16 PM)

Nevada state bans fantasy sports...calling it unlicensed gambling. But of course one can engage in fantasy sports contests in Nevada casinos. And this after they went after Uber even throwing some in jail and impounding their cars. until they threw some 'weight' at Carson City.

The sport leagues themselves don't call this gambling. The sports investors don't call it gambling. But OH, no, when it steps on the toes of casinos...it's gambling don't ya'know.

FanDuel said in a statement that it was “terribly disappointed” in the board’s action and framed it as one that only benefits “incumbent Nevada casinos,” which regulators have permitted to provide daily fantasy sports if they already have a sportsbook license.

“This decision stymies innovation and ignores the fact that fantasy sports is a skill-based entertainment product loved and played by millions of sports fans,” FanDuel’s statement said. “We are examining all options and will exhaust all efforts to bring the fun, challenge and excitement of fantasy sports back to our Nevada fans.”

DraftKings similarly cast the regulatory action as beneficial to entrenched interests and vowed to fight back.

“We understand that the gaming industry is important to Nevada and, for that reason, they are taking this exclusionary approach against the increasingly popular fantasy sports industry,” the company’s statement said. “We strongly disagree with this decision and will work diligently to ensure Nevadans have the right to participate in what we strongly believe is legal entertainment that millions of Americans enjoy.”

HERE

Tesla cannot sell cars directly in some states, mostly red, i.e., repub states and the right in general, have always promoted...DE-regulate, get govt. out of the way of innovation. Ha !! You be the judge.

HERE

I've been laughing at the right for over 35 years for their constant harangue against govt. regulations, except...when their for it.

i don't disagree that big government republicans are little better than big government democrats, but in this case, from what I understand, the decision was made by the state gaming board, and not the legislature or the governor.

how is this a republican/red state issue?

More red states (then blue states) are regulating competition in many industries while espousing the opposite. It happened before in NV when a few years back, other cab companies wanted to enter the market and the state had erected ridiculously high fees to obtain licensing.

(oh and BTW, the state gaming board simply enforces the gaming law on the books passed in this case...by a red state that allows the casinos to operate what is not considered gambling)

In Va. where I spent most of my adult life and a historically red state, they allowed to the two largest cab companies to merge, raising lease rates to double and more. Suffice it to say that for all of their rhetoric, red states are far too eager to regulate for parochial interests.

I wouldn't even think that a big deal except that George Will wrote an article claiming it was a left/progressive problem when that couldn't be further from the truth. It was entrenched 'capitalist' interests that were behind it. The red states are far too ready not to regulate businesses as such but to regulate-out competition. Yet competition is the foundation of a free market.

Comrade bounty, how do you think the gaming board is appointed?

bounty44 -> RE: Yea, Red states...de-regulate !! (10/17/2015 1:49:34 PM)

I don't know enough about Nevada and the gambling question in particular here, but isn't the state merely trying to figure out how to reconcile the current incarnation of fantasy leagues with federal law that was passed ~10 yrs ago? I didn't see anything in the article that specifically said the gaming board's decision were related to changes in state (and therefore republican) laws.

im a bit skeptical of too much onus (blame) on "red state" positions...state legislatures and governors change parties somewhat frequently and sometimes the presidential votes go contrary to that.

but I agree---on the whole competition is a good thing and id be dismayed to hear of republican government officials doing things that stymy it.
