Maybe I can help. I realize that I'm not a submissive, but I feel so strongly about this topic, that I'm compelled to reply. Sorry in advance if I'm out of line.
I've invested a lot of time doing research, asking questions and coming to my own conclusions.
Gor is sci-fi fantasy. A series of 27? books. I've read most of them, and gave them a lot of thought. The stories, if you can get past the poor writing, are entertaining and spark the imagination. There are some philosophies involved that are intriguing to say the least regarding male and female relationships, and how slavery can be used as an institution to enhance and deepen that relationship. But those aren't the only philosophies considered in the books. The others involve how one might view himself/herself as a part of nature, rather than above or outside of it. How to respect and revere nature seems to be a foundation in a lot of the philosophies presented.
I do suggest looking for the books written by John Norman, but I also suggest that as you read and enjoy them, try to imagine how a society like that might develop. Imagine how dominance and submission evolved between men and women.
I can certainly let you in on what a true Gorean is, though. He cherishes and improves his property, he does his best to free his slave emotionally by placing her in bondage. He provides the training and education so that she can excel in her bondage to please him and not feel ashamed of the feelings that reside deep inside her. A true Gorean stands as a guardian between the world and his chosen woman, and her payment to such a man is love and pleasure. A true Gorean will not allow his woman to even lie to herself, and will show her what is really inside, no matter how much she might fight it.
Lastly, I don't consider myself as "Gorean", frankly, the label has gotten a lot of 'bad press', especially in the online world. Most people tend to emulate, thinking that if they emulate they understand what it means to be Gorean, or can claim to be Gorean. But more often than not, these people tend to be abusive. Some of the things I've seen online would make what I imagine a Gorean is blanch in horror at the atrocious things done to female slaves. I honestly think that if Goreans really existed, they would view the things I've seen and suggested as insane and abusive because many of those activities do not enhance the relationships between men and women at all, they can only degrade or wreck them.
Ownedslave, here is the basic criteria of a Gorean slave, in my view. Intelligence, beauty, pleasure and eagerness. They are not doormats. They are expressive, knowlegable about pleasing all the senses, including the imagination, they often challange thier masters to be strong and crave it. Keep this last paragraph in mind as you do your research and 'training'. It will serve you best of all. If something doesn't measure up to these things, chances are, it's a red flag.
