I just had a HR rep from a firm call me the other day for a position. I got the very distinct impression that because I had to take a job that was not in my field for a couple of years (Due to the Recession) that I was not going to be considered for the position.

The Recruiter then asked me what I was doing between 1992-2004, I explained to her and then told her well I only put the last ten years on my resume because I was under the impression that was all that needed to be on a resume.

I am getting the idea, that those three years are what has hurt me in my job search. That they are only looking for someone who has been doing this with no breaks at all.

Years ago, When Joan Rivers had her talk show, she interviewed a lady that created a fake Acting Agent. She got a Voice Mail account, a PO box in the name of her fake agency. Anytime that she had to call anyone she used a fake British Accent.

She went from NO Work, No Agency Representing her, No one much cared if she lived or died so to hear her say, to her working on a regular basis. On Joan's show she showed photos of her and her friend at Hollywood Parties, Hob Nobbing with A List celebrities.

What I am thinking, is if this is the case and that Why don't I create a Company, and say that I have been privately employed for those missing years? that fills in the time and then if I get a second cell phone and give them the voice mail for that then have a friend call them and say what a wonderful marvelous employee I have been. Its been done before, so why can't I take advantage of the system

I have already done that mate and I have given references to people I have never even met who found themselves in the same position as you. You would also be surprised at the number of interviewers who claim to have seen my trucks with their distinctive logo on them, everywhere from the NSW border to the north of Queensland. The only vehicle I own is a 4 year old sedan and my suite of offices consist of a bench in my workshop. All I ever ask of anybody who needs a reference is that they give me a call and let me know dates and places etc. Illegal ? maybe.................effective ? Definitely.

Good Luck anyway.

What you're proposing already exists. Check out this site, which I have actually seen featured on TV here in the states.

Am I the only one thinking "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!"?

When the recruiter said a company I'd interviewed with wanted to know what I was doing during a three year break; I told her to tell them I was on Sabbatical.

I was offered the job.

Fast Reply:

If they bust you on using a fake reference, it can lead to instant dismissal, it's something you want to weight in whatever you do.

Could you maybe claim that during this time you were self-employed and doing contract work (don't know in which field you were working and if that helps), going that far back, you also could have technically worked for a small company that doesn't exist anymore (cough - you best research it) but a former colleague or boss could give you a reference...

There is no way in a million years anyone cares about what you were doing 10 years back.

Look for another reason as to why you're not getting the job because that ain't it.

Also, take it on the chin and be honest - stop trying to cheat your way into work.
