I apologize for not reading 3-plus pages of replies, but the answer, as I understand it, hadn't made the first page.
'Sane', also to mean 'in one's right mind', has always meant the discouragement of either party of using drugs or alcohol. If the submissive is not in this state, then he/she might not be able to defend themselves or discern when to use safe words. If the dominant is not in this state, then their actions might not be as responsible as they should be.
I would expect that a lot of people do not feel that they need to be absolutely strict about this, but for the most part I have always held to that particular 'S'. I used to have a relationship with a submissive who felt the need to drink heavily, and still wanted to play. Knowing that I could go further with pain play sounded like a rush, but in reality playing with her at all was just no fun.
