peppermint -> Is this stupid or what? (11/11/2015 4:43:12 PM)

We're slowly but surely heading south. I have noticed a strange thing in the motel rooms where we've stayed. Each is a non smoking room. Each contains an ashtray that is placed upside down with a no smoking sticker on it. Why have an ashtray in a no smoking room? The no smoking sticker could be attached to the desk, or the wall, or the door. But no, they put an ashtray in the room and then say you can't use the ashtray. Dumb, very dumb, or am I missing something?

They charge a monstrous penalty for smoking in nonsmoking rooms. So, it's kind of subliminal advertising.

Or it could be as simple as putting an ash tray in the room for a smoker who might have been outnumbered by non-smokers when booking the room to have an ash tray to take outside with them to have a smoke, instead of throwing butts on the ground.

My Dad's been a GM of hotels for almost all of my life. The ashtray is there because they know that someone will smoke in that room. The cleaning penalty is a profit center for the hotel.

The only way the "take the ashtray outside" theory works is if the hotel has exterior access to the rooms or a balcony.

Yes you are missing the most important part. Are you asking why the ashtray is in a non smoking room?. Because it was put there as part of the room equipment before they decided which room is a non smoking room. And the ashtray stayed there , never been used because at the reception desk they give that specific room to non smokers. And certainly there was a non-smoking sign on the door. And I guess a non smoker person won't use the ashtray so it stayed there Doh! OMG.OMG.OMG. we are heading south faster than we thought we were..........we are almost in Montgomery, AL....... Jesus Christ. ....

That's a little diabolical!

That doesn't explain the "No Smoking" sticker on the ashtray itself.

Possible. However the smokers I know prefer to toss the butts on the ground.

I knew there was a penalty if you smoke in the room. I didn't realize that hotels and motels would love to catch you doing so for the extra money. Interesting and makes sense.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Is this stupid or what? (11/11/2015 11:36:07 PM)

Having booked more than one room for an out-of-town trip or two and arriving at the front desk to be told that they had over-booked. I can tell you this is a scam, in another way:

I simply showed my confirmation for a smoking room, told the manager (or whoever) that I would be happy to go to another hotel that did have the smoking accommodations they (the original hotel) had promised me and that they (the original hotel) would be paying the difference (I always angle toward a slightly better hotel).

You might be surprised how quickly a non-smoking room becomes a smoking room. I feel bad for the person after me who might be legitimately allergic to nicotine/cigarette smoke (as opposed to the thousands of assbags who used to just claim to be, before the non-smoking insanity in this country) who might wind up in that room that the hotel so capriciously re-designated.

Personally I use an ashtray in a hotel room as a place to put small bits of trash like soda wrappers. Instead of getting up to find the trash can which is always across the room from where I sit.

There are ashtrays in most (pre 1999) 737's.

I don't know what the scam is about. I'd probably listen to Oside on the matter.

I was pleasantly surprised the last time MP and I stayed in a hotel room. First cigarette I'd had in bed for eighteen months.

Yep , I really really badly wanted to have one of those fancy ashtrays for souvenir, but they won't let me take one. I would pay tho.

Shame on you. At least sit up straight when smoking in bed. Show some dignity. Well at least it wasn't cookies in bed.

I was naked at the time. Does that go in my favor? [8D]

I can't recall ever seeing an ashtray in a hotel room.

DesFIP -> RE: Is this stupid or what? (11/13/2015 11:58:29 AM)

I don't think you get them in states where there aren't smoking rooms. All of NY is nonsmoking. PA the same.

But I imagine there still are states that permit this, like VA, NC, SC - states where tobacco is still a major crop.
