What happened in Paris was tragic, and yet a day before, ISIS had struck another city, but not in Europe.

Beirut mourns its dead; weathers comparisons to Paris

(CNN)As buildings lit up in the colors of the French flag, and the 129 people killed in Paris on Friday filled headlines, many people in Beirut felt the West -- and its news media -- had forsaken them.

A day before the French attacks, two suicide bombers had killed 43 people and wounded 239 more in the Lebanese capital in an ISIS-propagated murder.

The explosions detonated within 150 meters (490 feet) and five minutes of each other in the Bourj al-Barajneh district in southern Beirut on Thursday, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said.

But on Friday, Western cameras turned away, focusing intently on France.

And these folks didnt even rate a footnote here, on these boards.

I didn't see you posting anything about the massacre of 2000 Nigerians a few months back either.

Point?

The folks here are interested mainly in arguing (1) about guns and (2) with each other.

It's not the International Times. And America is the blindest to international affairs.

Nor is the Beirut atrocity the only one to miss out:

In north west Kenya, 147 Garissa University students were massacred by Al-Shabab militants. Al-Shabab is a Somalian Al Quada affiliate, which is at war with Kenya after Kenya took military action against the group. Previously this group was responsible for the Westgate Shopping Mall atrocity in 2013 in which some 70 odd shoppers were mown down, and numerous atrocities in its Somalian base.

It seems Africa is even less sexy than Beirut.

I have pointed out on multiple threads that they have killed more Moslems than they have Christians. ISIS is not just a threat to the west, but to everyone who doesn't accept their perverted version of Islam.

Part of this is because of the impression that they are all "bad guys" and bad guys killing bad guys isn't that big a problem. Not saying that is the truth, but that is the impression.

When there’s a mass shooting in the United States, the right insists that no one use the phrase conservatives don’t want to hear (“gun control”). But when there’s deadly terrorism, the right insists that everyone use the phrase conservatives do want to hear (“Islamic terrorism”).

FR

I have a few thoughts/theories about the different reactions to Paris and Beirut:

-- Sad to say, Beirut has endured strife and violence for as long as I can remember, so we're numb to its sorrows. An attack of this sort in Paris, on the other hand, was a huge shock.

-- At least in my circle of friends and family, people felt a personal connection to Paris. We'd visited there, studied there, worked there, lived there, dreamed of visiting, and so forth. On my Facebook feed, I was struck by the number of folks who knew someone in Paris at the time of the attacks and feared for their loved ones' safety. I was also jolted, looking at a map of the attacks, by how the killers had struck places I'd been to myself.

-- Paris and the U.S. have a long, if sometimes thorny, shared history. We probably couldn't have battled Britain during the Revolution without French aid, and one of our most iconic emblems--the Statue of Liberty--was a gift from France.

-- The City of Lights has, I think, a special place in the world's (or maybe just Westerners') hearts. I know I'm not alone in thinking of it almost as the capital of civilization itself. A famous saying, variously attributed to both Franklin and Jefferson, says "Every man has two countries: France and his own." So the Paris massacre was an assault on the world's heart/soul in many eyes.

MrRodgers -> RE: And yet, these people didnt matter..... (11/16/2015 9:51:59 AM)

What matters ? The appeal to western demographics, marketing.

Plus, it's not just about who pays the media for news about Africa or the ME but it is in the west that fear must reign to justify what France is already on their way to doing...amending their constitution, as if that will make a difference.

It will, for the French, not the terrorists...let alone ISIS.

On a side note, I find it a strange logic that gun laws don't do anything to stop gun violence and I am not saying they do yet restricting other (civil) constitutional rights will magically cull out and stop the terrorists.

In a way you are echoing the OP, Paris was covered more because we care more. You are correct though that there has been so much violence in that region, and Africa, that we have been numbed by it.

Not everyone "lives" on these boards.. and its pretty hard to comment on events you arent even aware of.. To a great degree people focus on news events that tv, newspapers, the media report on.. For me, I dont watch tv, I dont listen to the radio, I dont sit on the internet 24/7.. I read (more like gloss thru) the local newspaper and thats it.. So if its not reported in that one local paper I dont hear about it (although some news I actually read about here first, oddly enough).. You cant blame people that didnt hear about other (terror) events cuz they were living their lives oblivious to what isnt being reported in the media they watch/read..

Kirata -> RE: And yet, these people didnt matter..... (11/16/2015 2:07:59 PM)

I don't think it's fair or accurate to say that those people "didn't matter". But suicide bombings in the Middle East and the depredations of Boko Haram and Al Shaabab in Africa have become numbing in their bloodthirsty regularity. A major coordinated terror attack in the peaceful capital a first world nation, with over a hundred dead and hundreds more in hospitals, is a trifle more shocking.

I'm sorry, I missed where it is in the "TOS" that states upon learning about any news story, we must stop what we are doing and rush to CollarChat and start or reply to a thread.

I will endeavor to do better with the next tragedy.
