Several of the message boards I've posted on have a policy that seems to discourage socks and trolls: A set number (ten, maybe?) of messages from each new poster have to be vetted before going live. Once the poster has passed muster, s/he can post freely.

This doesn't guarantee that Mr. Hyde won't appear in post eleven, of course, but it might deter at least some not-ready-for-prime-time players.

I realize this would be more labor-intensive, but I've a hunch that veteran posters might be willing to pitch in rather than keep watching the forum's slow, sad demise. I know I would.

Just a thought.

I think it's the labor intensive part that would be the problem. They can't keep up with the problem as it presents itself now. It's not that there aren't qualified people here to do it. Heck, you and I could probably name at least a dozen posters who could be trained in just a few hours. A couple of them volunteered on the forums just a couple of weeks ago.

Couldn't pay me to do it. Considering we have folks with a history of threatening people around this joint, it's not worth it.

Yeah, they're not going to do more work than they're doing now. The latest comment I got from TPTB regarding the socktards was "You know, you can report them without adding to the mess I need to clean up."

Don't hold your breath expecting more.

It seems a fair bit cleaner this morning...I'm guessing someone has been bleaching those rancid socks!

This post smacks of frustration a frustration that was encouraged by you every time you reply to someone you feel is a troll or sock.... Takes two to fight.... It is sad that instead of introducing topics of interest everyone is giving attention to the troll just like they want.

But had to laugh a bit over vetting and veteran posters, so essentially the veterans under your plan control who comes in or not...?

The other solution is to delete your account and move off to another site, but with all the quality posts to your credit your not willing to do that...lol

that is the problem with central authority solutions, you want to get relief of a problem, but the argument you create with the other person becomes just more work for the moderator to clean up.... wow I haven't expected anyone to clean up my mess since sixth grade... So why don't everyone just ignore the socks and trouble makers and report a post without arguing over it first.

@All

Let me just explain something to you. It's very simple.

We have several people creating socks and posts with enough time on their hands to make 23 new profiles in ONE NIGHT from a single account.

Before you ask, no, they cannot be blocked by IP, or whatever. And I don't have the tools at my disposal.

So, YOU can do something about it, or you can whine.

You can simply report the threads and block the socks, knowing that SOMEONE will at some point get it taken care of. This will:

A. Cut down on the moderation I have to do when there is a perfectly valid thread with sock replies or insults. EVERY time you quote them, I have to edit all of your quotes, or take you out with the trash, which I am attempting to avoid.

B. Take away what they want: Your attention. Duh.

Of course, I guess whining in the forums and reporting every single thread multiple times both here and to my personal inbox is your right. However, it really does just slow us down in getting everything cleaned up.

Your choice.

Carry on.

@Bunnicula

I'm supremo-sexy all the time. But I have to hide that, or the forums would be even worse off, with everyone cat-fighting over me. I just don't have that kind of time. :)

Ya know, when you first came on the boards one month ago, I was convinced that you were one of those socks too. You have managed to show enough familiarity with the human race to stay on the boards, but I am not yet convinced that this profile is not one of TSP's early incarnations.

I have (as well as others) received that exact sentiment repeatedly in the halcyon days of yore and I expect moderator attitudes and software tools have not changed since those august times.

Oh my. Those are folks with some serious issues.

The idea mentioned in my OP was a general policy topic not a critique of your personal service, which I much appreciate. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

@All

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for not engaging the sock much last night. Best to report and block, or report and ignore. I will make it a point to delete and ban and remove all posts ASAP.

If you engage/quote the socks, your posts may vanish as well, and frankly, that's just encouraging their antics.

You guys (and gals) rock!

Thank you again.
