That's disgusting.

Everyone knows they're far superior deep fried or grilled. You need to crisp them up to make them edible.

Apparently we owe fish and chips to Jewish influence, Des.

Back in the day Jewish families used to sell food out of their houses to passers-by who'd had too much beer, out of a shutter in their homes in order to supplement their income.

The whole fish and chips thing is hotly debated though. Northerners could never accept that Londoners were capable of creating something which is so inherently Northern, but if it did come out of London then it will be certain that fish and chips was created by Jews.

First fish and chips I ever had were sold out of a window in Islington before it became trendy and overpriced, the fish was cut cube sized and it was doused in malt vinegar, don't remember much more, don't even remember how I ended up in Islington, I think we must have been up to no good... Let's say the Islington of 20 years ago was quite different from the upscale place it is now....

Crisp butties (another abomination) is pretty much the same but just with chips or crisps as they are called here (you know like Lays and stuff)

You're a young lady and no longer a girl, OG, so there's no longer any excuse for being disgusting.

I read a blog that fish and chips is actually healthy, something like a proper fish and chip, oil will not penetrate the batter to reach the fish meat inside, and steaming action to cook the meat inside happens haha!

I felt so much better eating it after! Probably just lying to myself to feel good! I used to drive my x-dom nuts when I eat fish and chips, because, I would fill a whole deep small bowl with malt vinegar and soak the entire piece of deep fried fish which I slice into cubes, inside to completely fully absorb the vinegar, and then put it in my mouth. I do the same with the chips.

His always like, am I eating vinegar or am I eating the fish? This ain't how UK people eat it lol!

But I love sour and acidity things, so more vinegar the better!

I followed a fish and chips recipe on the internet that uses Guinness stout inside the batter and it taste pretty amazing.

I got to admit those British curry sauce for chips taste amazing. Similar to Japanese curry but not exactly.

Deep fried mars bars are a Scottish thing - wouldn't happen in England.

Curry sauce on chips? Does happen - but not for me - and, they are healthy in the sense that you're getting a huge piece of fish, but there's a lot of batter.

Anyway, they're not supposed to healthy - they're supposed to be tasty.

But, it's largely dead now anyway.

When I was growing up - not that far back - only the '80s, fish shops sold only fish and chips, these days they sell pizzas, kebabs and all sorts which to me spoils it an defeats the point of a traditional English food and way of life.

yes, but not in 20 years.

So, how does a lass from the South (I assume from the South as you say Mum and not Mam), or at least the Midlands, know about savelop dips?

No one I know outside of the North East has heard of 'em.

My best friend in school was a geordie lass, who moved south cos of her dads job from 11-16. I friended her cos a she had the most amazing accent, was lots of fun and we got into some fun/not so much fun stuff together, I spent half my life after school at her house. I have a lot of geordie friends too. The north south divide has always been made fun of in our house.

Bacon Butties and chip butties, are comfort food.
