You would still have the intellectual copyrights to it; as in, you have the ability to report others who steal it.
However, you have given the site absolute carte-blanche to use it as they see fit.

So, for all intent and purposes, you have given the site owners (and their agents) the rights to use it, modify it, mis-represent it, duplicate it, publish it.... etc, as per their terms for uploading a pic on their site.

At the same time, this site has very specific rules about copyright infringement. We used to not be able to do as much as re-post published articles in their entirety, allowing only the lead paragraph and the supporting link. Do they still do that now that it's the "dungeon" of P&R?

I dunno to be honest.

So much has been changed or ignored with the recent Mod revolving doors over the last few months, it's hard to tell which bits of the ToS they are enforcing and which bits they will let ride.

Just keep in mind the golden internet rule, "If you do not want everyone in the world to see your pictures, do not post them online". The reality is that if you post a picture online, people can steal it. Whether or not it is copyrighted or not. Good luck trying to sue a person in India, China, USSR etc. I see the argument to be null about Collarspace using you photo for whatever purpose. The reality is, if you post a pic online, anyone can take and use it. It maybe illegal to do so, but that does not stop anyone.

That's pretty much my take on it too

Sigh. All too many indeed.

... let's go back to common horny idiot...That's who the ads work on

I must agree because it's easy for the owners to tell if the ads are working, and, they have had those ads for a while, so, they must be working for them, even down to the part about those featured "profile" being right there, in YOURTOWN USA!

Someone is paying for the ad, so, they have a vested interest in ensuring that it's working; so we can both agree, almost certainly there are a lot of fools clicking on those ads and signing up to alt.com, adultfriendfinder.com, etc., as a result.

I'm gonna guess that the reason the alt.com banner ads on Collarspace use geolocation of your IP address is that, perhaps, they're not legally allowed the location information we manually enter (e.g., zip code) onto this Collarspace site.

They really don't have to tell you. Click that button and you've transferred copyright.

You don't see me clicking that button.
I was hoping one of you (fools?) would have done that for me!
:)

Click that button and they can do anything with it that they want.

I really don't know what they do with it, while I do realize they can do a lot with it.

I suspect they do two things at least:
  • 1. They use your photo in the "featured photos" button (which has zero value to you)
  • 2. They use your photo in third party ads (which also has no value to you)

I'm aware. I want to thank you again for teaching me that trick about posting shots to the forums.

Credit goes to DreamLady actually; I simply documented the steps.

What you really want to know is how to protect yourself from a site, such as Collarspace, which is inherently insecure (i.e., there is no http(s)).

    quote:

At the time, adblock worked for the average forum participant. I really don't doubt that your methods work better.

My methods are well known in the tech community; but most people don't know them, so, it's too much detail, for them, to figure out the ramifications; so they use adblock instead.

The devil is always in the detail.

One of these days, I'll talk to you about those annoying ads that come through when I'm trying to read the dang news.

As you can imagine, I pore over the news every day, reading everything that interests me, so, I have been exposed to obnoxious stuff, all of which I shut down if/when I can.

For example, I open multiple tabs from Google News, and some of them obnoxiously play video (which simply repeats what is in the text, which I can read faster in the text than they can banter about in the video).

There are MANY ways to avoid that automatic video (turn off flash, for one!) but with the recent advent of Firefox version 42, you can now FIND and DESTROY those ads, simply by looking for a "speaker" icon in the offending tab, and clicking on that icon.

Voila! No more obnoxious playing videos.
And, there are no details other than to install the latest version of Firefox.

Of course, there are *other* things you can do, but maybe we should have a thread on that. For one, you could download the MVP Hosts File, which is what I used as my starter hosts file on all my machines.

Of course, I do more (much much more), for example, I wipe out my entire Firefox profile directory EVERY time I restart Firefox. Yup. Even though I "think" I have prevented "bad stuff" from being saved to my profile, you never really can be sure, so, my Firefox startup script loads a semi-hardened profile all the time.

If I "want" to make a change, I make it to the semi-hardened profile, and not to the current session. I don't expect everyone to do this, but, as I said, the devil is in the details.

The average person probably doesn't even realize how dangerous Collarspace is, not being encrypted, let alone these types of details.

A very high percentage of regular forum members wouldn't know for fact and I don't think New Mod would give us that info, even if we asked nicely.

The new mod seems like a fine guy (it's a guy, right?).
I've gotten a few messages from him, and he seems to be reasonable.

Do you know, I've been seeing that same thing recently? I thought it was a glitch.

If you see an error message like the one I showed, it means a domain couldn't be reached. There are MANY reasons that could happen, so, it's perfectly reasonable that you would have seen such a message.

I'm telling you, man. I almost wanted to throw a parade the day they implemented the spam feature. Good for longer term members. Unfortunately, around that same time, they put up that 'newest member' feature. I don't think that did women on either side of the slash any favors. I'm sure it's not a picnic for new males, either.

Which is why I feel like a fool because I'm the one who has to pipe up and say *some* of them are correct. I'm sure it makes me look stupid, gullible, or both, but certain areas of AK aren't exactly big, huge kink communities. It's kind of hard not to know the faces that showed up.

    quote:

For the life of me, I can't imagine why. All of the complaints about Alt (without paid membership) are solved by Fet, save one. Open chat. Not person to person chat, like Fet has. Actual room chat. That might be the thing that's keeping Alt and AFF alive.

    quote:

No joke. Until I started screwing with settings, I was sitting right here, eighteen months after I moved, still getting the AK feed. I wish I could tell you why but I'm too much of a tech idiot to know.

    quote:

You don't see me clicking that button.

    :)

Yeah. Remind me to smack you for that one.

The featured photo button? I can see why this site would be plugging that, even if the photos weren't being transferred to other sites. There are so many factors that have contributed to numbers being down. The place is still turning a pretty penny but it's not what it was making just a few years ago. My research methods suhuhuckkkkk compared to the way Resident Sadist does it. His research on numbers is impressive.

    quote:

I really don't know what they do with it, while I do realize they can do a lot with it.

I don't think many do know and the few that do, probably aren't going to show up on the thread to tell all. If they did, whatever gimmick that is going loses steam and reduces the result they are trying to create.

Hey, if it was my business (as in business ownership) I'd try to sell the product. I've never went with the theory that the place shouldn't make money. CM wasn't exactly started as a charity.

  • One exception. If I really thought the photos from the wax project would end up encouraging more education, like the original intention that I had, I'd probably do it. Here and on the other site (FL) I can't tell you how many emails I've received in the past three years about how to do this trick or that trick safely. I don't know. Greater good and all of that.

I know. You've recommended this before. So, if I should need it, I promise to take you up on the offer, someday. Be warned in advance that I am very stubborn, can be thick headed, and sometimes, rather dense. However, I can be taught.

    quote:

<Insert row of expletives here that make me sound like a sailor.>

If I screw with that, how does it effect my WoW gaming? I still want that to make noise.

A thread on that wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't see why it would be bad for Off Topic. You techie folks could compare methods and folks like me would learn something.

    quote:

Probably not but I don't see it as being as dangerous as sites that hold financial information. Unless somebody is going to get my physical (down to the street) address from the IP, shouldn't it be ok?

While I find New Mod to be reasonable most of the time, due to certain differences of opinion, I don't see us sitting down to a friendly dinner anytime soon. I would say we have different priorities and leave it at that.

No offense meant but I don't see it as a loss. I don't know how it is when females are the featured shot(s) but most of the male ones don't really have much when it comes to the actual BDSM stuff. It's not that I don't like face shots. I do. Still, I'm more the type to enjoy BDSM art. Rope ties, needle designs, fire shots, etc. Call me strange.

I'll consider that a fair warning.
What I'm trying to say is that everything is simple once you understand how it works, but, usually it's not as simple as some people would like it to be (and, in many cases, it's not simple enough for some people to understand).

...I don't see it as being as dangerous as sites that hold financial information. Unless somebody is going to get my physical (down to the street) address from the IP, shouldn't it be ok?

    Here's the problem.
  • Everything you type (yes, everything) into a non-secure site, is available to EVERYONE who has access to your packets (which is pretty much anyone who wants them)
  • This means anyone within WiFi distance (e.g., your neighbors, or that guy sipping a latte at the next table over)
  • This means anyone at your ISP or at your ISPs upstream ISP or at Collarspace's ISP, etc. (just do a traceroute, and it's all of those and more)
  • In my case, it's my Tor exit node (which can be set up for nefarious purposes)
  • In some cases, it's your VPN provider (if you try to add security via VPN which at least knocks out your ISP and your neighbors)
    etc.

    Think about what's at stake?
    - All your kink-related privacy <==== it's pretty personal stuff for some of us
Think how easy the real solution is?
    - Collarspace need only implement https <=== it's not rocket science

I fully agree with you, which is why, using my normal browser, my hosts file would kick those ads out in a second.

Have you said "yes" to this feature and what do you think are the complete ramifications of doing so?

I don't know if it's new, but I recently noticed constant and repeated requests by Collarspace to get me to answer this question below:

The reason I ask is that we already know that alt.com pays Collarspace owners to display "arbitrary" meta information attached to seemingly arbitrary users' profile pictures, some of whom I (and others) have recognized as real profile pictures, even though we have been told that all the meta information is made up (e.g., they usually show up in YOUR town, even though they are not).

I don't know if the alt.com users even REALIZE that their pictures show up in "MY TOWN" on Collarspace (who knows if these alt.com users even KNOW that collarspace exists, for example).

Likewise, while I'm never the type to say "yes" to the question above (never sign anything or say yes to anything where you yourself don't get value out of it), I must ask if any of you have seen this request repeatedly and constantly recently, and, whether you said yes, and, if you did, what do you think the ramifications are?

there fun to look at and see the inconsistancy of the photo and the place they say there from... it is the internet after all...
