if I drink whiskey it has to be a single malt and most likely an Islay one.

M's favorite is Laphroaig.

Good champagne tends to be on the dry side, if you don't like it, why on earth spend the money for something you don't like? The old widow aka Veuve Clicquot has some quite quoffable bottles of non-vintage champagne that will only set you back about £30 to £50 but again if it's not your drink, why bother?

It's not so much the issue of being dry as it is not wanting something too sweet. But I'm only going by what I've been told so far.

True, but I'm sharing this with my mother and she's just not a big bourbon drinker. [:D]

Besides, it's an opportunity for me to try expanding my own palate a little bit.

But at the same time, would love to hear your feedback on the demi sec. Maybe get Veuve Cliquot which will have good acid balance.

Sure thing. I'll let you know.

Laphroiag has some really good ones though Ardbeg and some Port Ellen's are absolutely fabulous!

Have you got a Trader Joe's nearby? They have a Single Malt Islay (Finlaggan or so) for about $20 and I sampled it next to the 15 year old Laphroaig and couldn't tell the difference, they also have a very very nice Speyside one.

I'll have to tell him about that. He really likes the peat-y-ness.

The other thing is what are you eating with the champagne? I'd want a dry one if I was pairing it with caviar and chicken kiev. If it was just being served with dessert, then a sweeter one would be appropriate.

So do I, has to be tasting of iodine like some old fashioned bandages ;) He may want to try a Lord of the Isles from Ardbeg or a Port Ellen, but seriously, the Trader Joe's stuff just blew me away, the Islay one is quite peaty and tastes like the 18 year old Laphroaig, it's seriously a Single Malt Scotch which I would put at minimum twice the price, the Speyside doesn't have quite so much peat but still more than a hint (that slight medicinal flavour) and is amazingly smooth.

My guess is that like their wines they buy from very good sources the overproduction and just sell it under their own label to avoid that the brand price drops.

Tell him that he might want to invest in some spring water from the region and just add a few drops, it opens the flavours without end.
