They have a Single Malt Islay (Finlaggan or so) for about $20 and I sampled it next to the 15 year old Laphroaig and couldn't tell the difference, they also have a very very nice Speyside one.

The other thing is what are you eating with the champagne? I'd want a dry one if I was pairing it with caviar and chicken kiev. If it was just being served with dessert, then a sweeter one would be appropriate.

My guess is that like their wines they buy from very good sources the overproduction and just sell it under their own label to avoid that the brand price drops. Tell him that he might want to invest in some spring water from the region and just add a few drops, it opens the flavours without end.
