Calling Muslim extremism a disease, Saudi Arabia has announced the formation of a coalition of 34 Islamic nations to fight terrorism.

Good.

Good!

Hope to see more news coverage on exactly what are they contributing and doing to fix their problem.

While any increased effort by the Arab/Muslim world against the barbarians of IS is to be welcomed, this initiative leaves a few questions unanswered.

If the linked report is accurate, it is significant that both Iran and the Kurds have omitted from the coalition. Kurdish and Iranian forces have proved to be the most effective and successful 'on the ground' fighters against IS in Iraq and Syria. This omission leads to questions about the exact nature of the coalition. Why have the most successful anti-IS fighters been omitted? Is this Saudi led coalition a genuine anti-IS coalition or another part of Saudi Arabia's campaign against Iran and Shias, which is fuelling the murderous bombing campaign in Yemen and unilaterally fuelling the sectarian divide and conflict throughout the ME?

It is difficult to suppress a laugh when we hear Saudis condemn what they call "Islamist extremism". This, from the country that has institutionalised the extremist Wahhabi ideology as the official State ideology, which has then exported that fundamentalist poison throughout the Muslim world, from one of the main financial backers of IS and from one of the countries that has armed and equipped IS, is hard to take seriously.

I wish I could find some reasons to be more optimistic about this initiative.

I don't trust the Saudis either. But if ISIS isn't stopped, it will consume the Middle East.

I counted 58 states in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The Kurds weren't listed. I believe that they are considered part of Iraq which could possibly they are members of the coalition by default but not even close to sure about this.

That's possible. Kurdistan isn't its own country.

tweakabelle -> RE: Saudi Coalition against ISIS (12/15/2015 5:36:47 AM)

I am far from convinced that 'fighting terrorism' means the same thing in Riyadh as it does in the West. Most Westerners would assume that in today's context, 'fighting terrorism' means fighting IS. My suspicion is that for the Saudis, 'fighting terrorism' is code for its campaign against what it perceives as Iranian and Shia attempts at expanding their influence in the region. For example, the Saudis describe their aggression in Yemen as 'fighting terrorism'. The coalition is primarily a Sunni coalition, and there appears to be a dearth of Shia States in its membership. This concern is discussed in greater detail here

We have seen how Turkey another major Sunni regional power has interpreted 'fighting terrorism' as an excuse to launch attacks on Kurdish separatists who had been under a ceasefire, while IS expanded its area of control in Syria and Iraq. The acid test of whether this coalition (which includes Turkey) is merely a vehicle for aggression against Shias or a genuine coalition to 'fight terrorism' will be if we see an escalation in the coalition's input to the fight against IS (which is currently a purely nominal input with none of the actual fighting or air sorties carried out by the Sunni States against IS), and whether Turkey closes its border to IS, and cuts off the flow of arms, money for oil and recruits that enter Syria from Turkey.

I for one won't be holding my breath.

Simple, Iran is the embodiment of Islamic extremism and everyone is afraid of the Kurds.. or it could be a simple as those two did want to join the coalation.

It is more likely that they were glossed over because it is not politick. Not wanting to piss off Turkey or the US.

Tweak you are so right...but just maybe something good can come from this... at least it is a start. I have been saying for a long time the only hope in solving the problems in the area is through a coalition of this kind... but we will have to wait to see if it is just talk or real action. One thing i do believe is the Saudi's are far more interested in Yemen than ISIS and this coalitions actions will be directed there first if anywhere.

I wonder what Israel thinks of this coalition? I bet they will worry that if successful in Syria...Yemen..and Iraq that they may be next.
