Btw that is the puppy we are talking about, and yes, I do look like a twat, sleep deprivation for a week, in need of a comb and some makeup....

But isn't he just a gorgeous little boy? I hope he won't grow much....

Consistency I think is the most important thing. Clarity is important too. Patience..

Come to think of it are they really that different from male subs? (IM JUST KIDDING- no one hang me here...)

But I'm really here because I want a puppy so badly right now that I'm living through you.

I literally am dreaming about it.
I'm basing getting a house on my imaginary dog I don't have yet.

Seriously, don't get a puppy, get an older dog, much less trouble....

The problem I have is simply that puppies have a short attention span and they want to play ALL THE TIME, and playing means ripping things up

H was joking that if Harvey continues his mission, I will have to walk around nekkid, then stroked Harvey and told him he's a good dog... Bloody men...

Lady C. An important thing is ONE toy for chewing.
At that age, they don't have this "my stuff/your stuff" down.
If he has a lot of toys, he will think that everything is "My stuff"
If he has one toy then that will be "His" and everything else is "Yours".

I had a lot of puppies through my teens.

I want a puppy. But I know they are a handful.

Thanks for that hint with one toy, I'm trying to make him carry a toy when we walk as it helps to keep him focused, he's all over the freaking shop, everybody and everything he meets is a potential friend and play partner, got slapped by tons of cats and managed to drag him away from a badger this evening.

Think it's OK if I leave squeaky toy for potty alerts and one of the other ones for chews? He also tends to steal from Kia and Monty, which does cause some friction and he doesn't understand that growling is a warning, he happily growls back and barks with the tail wagging manically and him smiling like a loon and "Ohhhh great game"

I tell you, my legs have never been in a better shape, though the bruises on them do distract a bit

Congrats on the new member of your family!

I am a puppy raiser for a non profit for service dogs - volunteers raise pups from age 8 weeks until 18 months then the school determines if it's a good working dog (right personality). These are mostly labs, retrievers, etc.

What I learned right away:

* If they chew something bad, do not punish, instead, remove the item and give the toy instead. Then lots of praise.
* They are like kids, you can't leave them unattended or else you miss the bad behavior and can't redirect it
* Dogs dont understand punishment. Nurture the side of them that longs to please
* Never use a crate as punishment. Make it a safe place, a den. During the day leave the door open and hide treats in there or a kong with peanut butter in it, so they like to go in and out.
* Use the crate for sleeping over night, always. If the puppy cries, tap it and say "Shhh". If it keeps up, leash the puppy and take it out to go to the bathroom - JUST bathroom, no romping around. No potty after a few minutes, back into the crate. Rinse, repeat. Super young pups have to go out every 4 hours or so at the start until they can hold their bladder, sometimes just a few days. Then they can hold it.
* Once you are sure the puppy is fine with the crate, then crate the dog when you cannot supervise it for bad chewing --ie whenever you leave the house.

Our dogs all love their crates. We leave the doors open all day and they spend a lot of time napping in there, then sleep in them at night. The best thing in the world was crate training our chihuahua! Many do not train little dogs as seriously as big dogs (after all, if the dog pulls on the leash you can hold her back, if the dog growls you can pick it up, etc.) We trained the little guy just like a service dog and she heels, doesn't yap at strange dogs, and is fully crate trained.

The problem is this puppy was neglected for 11 months and apparently taken from the litter too early, he's coming along nicely, but it's like you are dealing with a child who has serious issues.

I learned that after each training session and walk, he needs to go back to the crate to calm the fuck down, otherwise he's too excited. He never had much affection and is learning to accept it and enjoy it. He is learning boundaries...

He is a beautiful boy (though I do hope he doesn't grow much more) but has serious alpha traits, I don't punish dogs, the worst punishment I dole out is ignoring them, brings them to heel really fast.

All our previous rescues were problem dogs and they all turned out to be fab and well adjusted dogs, but all of them were a bit older. My biggest ally in training is the cat, he worships the cat, he will rough house with the other dogs but approaches the cat with absolute respect and grovelling, if grumpy cat lets him sniff him, he's in heaven.

What gets me is what kind of fucking idiot buys a Dobie puppy and doesn't realize that those dogs are BIG, then to shove it into a small cage, let it out to do the business and then it goes back again, it's cruel, they are highly intelligent, they need stimulation and exercise. I'm surprised he's not turned nasty.

My sister's lab would stay with us when she was away. He had an immediate attraction to roll in anything disgusting and decaying.
He came back to the house from a ditch in the backyard once just as the power went out. Two hours before I could get a hose on him!

He looks like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth.

He is sweet but he's a bit destructive...

He goes into his crate over night to avoid him destroying everything in the house, somehow he managed to persuade the girl to open his crate (she's the clever one who can work bolts) and he ended up eating the wooden banister on every landing, so I tried to get a carpenter ASAP, we got 3 floors (4 for you colonials as you count the ground floor as one), it's a bit of damage...

While I'm on the phone, all of a sudden a weird hybird thing pokes his head in, looks like a Dobie, just white, I have another look, he's covered in freaking feathers, Kia has a feather bed as she's 12 years old and deserves every comfort, he managed to rip the heavy canvas, rolled in the feathers, turned the living room into a winter wonderland, himself into a Dobie-bird...

A few years ago Kia and Alfie (RIP) played tug of war with a small feather pillow, we bought an industrial strength vacuum them, came in quite handy.

I'm going to bring the little shit to the tennis court (fenced in) where he can chase a ball until he's exhausted, after I made myself a cup of coffee and try to catch my breath again...

What about a frisbee? I've always thought they looked a lot more fun for throw-and-fetch games than balls.

They are good but you need a dog one, or the plastic can damage their teeth or splinter, we had 2 dog frisbees but Harvey ate them, and those things are damned expensive.

I also found out that he can open the fridge (he's tall enough though I suspect Kia might have helped) and now have to re-organize Xmas dinner...

Luckily the pasta was gluten free, as Dobies turn into canine chemical weapons if they ingest gluten...
