Goethe’s final words: "more light". Ever since we crawled out of that primordial slime, that’s been our unifying cry: more light. Sunlight, torchlight, candlelight, neon, incandescent, light to banish the darkness from our caves, to illuminate our roads, the insides of our refrigerators. Big floods for the night games at Soldier’s Field, little tiny flashlight for those books we read under the covers when we’re supposed to be asleep. Light is more than watts and footcandles, light is metaphor. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. Rage, rage against the dying of the light! Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom, lead thou me on. The night is dark and I am far from home, lead thou me on. Arise, shine, for thy light has come. Light is knowledge, light is life, light is light.

The winter solstice the shortest and darkest day. The beginning of Winter the bleakest time in the northern latitudes.

But now we go towards the light. Everyday we have a tiny fraction more daylight than the day before.

But if you are feeling that bleak, I would suggest a light box and 5,000 IU of Vitamin D III. Standard first treatment for Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder.

Whilst it is the shortest day for technical hullabaloo reasons I cant be bothered going into the sunrises will continue to get later for the next few days (past the 22nd) or so. Conversely the nights began to get lighter a few days, or so, before the winter solstice.

Growing up in a staunchly Catholic family, we took Advent very seriously and rued when folks put their lights up, and on, too early. Ours got lit after Mass on Christmas Eve.

Though no longer Catholic, I still take Advent seriously, and I do grimace when Christmas stuff shows up in stores before Halloween.

But as I've grown older and less certain of anything and everything, I've come to appreciate all those strands of December bulbs.

More and more, I realize what spurs those decorations in the dark: We need the light.

Light and joy be with you all.
