are you sure that what you label "beer" is really worth being called beer ...?
have you ever tried real beer?

Fortunately we can import quality even if we choose not to produce it.

Decent real ale doesn't travel so if you don't brew it locally you can't import it when at its best.

Yeah, but you aren't even in the UK so unless you can shrink that border to less than 100 miles from the brewery, you don't get 'good' decent beer.
Of all the wet brown stuff I suffered trying to find a good beer over the pond, I didn't find any.
Even the imported Newcastle Brown Ale tasted like crap compared to what we have here.
And you can shove the Coors and Bud where the sun don't shine, it's barely fit to clean the bog.

Nice monologue on Pale Ales - notably written by an American.
However, a lot of good decent beers are not pale ales at all but more the darker, slightly sweeter ales.
And, as the article clearly states, it is the water that is specifically around the Burton area that makes the ales so good, is something you cannot duplicate elsewhere, not even in the UK.
And that is why decent good ales aren't available in the US or anywhere else in the world - at least not to the standard that we enjoy here.

What you call 'good' is no more than second-rate to us.
They are certainly better than the usual brown muck served in the US, but still second-rate.

freedomdwarf1, I used to share your opinions until a microbrewery I found by chance in Phoenix (Arizona) proved me completely wrong.

I now find myself living 20 minutes from the Belgian border. The local beers there blow most British beer so far out of the water it's belly up in the Gobi. Belgian beer is reliably good, from bottle or pump. British beer is too dependent on both good practice and good luck: it's just too unreliable. If you're lucky, you can sometimes get a really good beer in a decent pub that's as good as anything out of a Belgian bottle, but you can get a really good beer out of Belgian bottles all the bloody time.

And Czech beer. Yum! I've never lived there, though, so I've no clue if the nectar I was served for 10p a pint just after the Velvet Revolution was normal or deliciously unusual. It was so good I forgot to stare at the barmaid's décolletage.

The one thing British beer has got over Belgian beer is not the beer, but the pub culture in which it's found. I miss good pubs.

Yes, they do. I love St. Pauli's girl which may be the best beer in the world to me. But too many in the US don't have it. So for Pilsner, I'll go with Corona, no lime and the beer Budweiser wishes it was.

Thank you all. Alcohol in excess is one of the things I oppose so much. I don't go to bars. When asked if I drink I always answer maybe 2 shots a year (for me that is heavy drinking - not an expression of others because my wife drinks some and I don't oppose her). It was a warning to my friends about potential things that can happen and my deisre to see all of you back next year. :D
