THE Cold War was a sustained state of political and military tension between the United States, its allies and Soviet Russia which lasted from 1947 to 1991.

It was called the Cold War because it never featured direct military action, since both sides possessed nuclear weapons, and their use would probably guarantee their mutual assured destruction. Cycles of relative calm would be followed by high tension which could have led to war. One of the most well known was Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 when an American U-2 spy plane discovered Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba.

What followed was 13 day stand off between the world’s two largest super powers. President John F Kennedy and his counterpart Khrushchev confronted each other and after a week of secret deliberations Kennedy announced the find to the world and imposed a naval blockade on Cuba. The crisis was resolved at the last minute on October 28 when Khrushchev accepted the U.S. offer.

During this time a British civilian organisation called the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation (UKWMO) utilising Royal Observer Corps (ROC) premises and its uniformed volunteers was on high alert. In Britain the public would have had a mere four minute warning of the approach of nuclear missiles and it was the job of the Royal Observer Corps to warn the UK Military and civilian authorities of the impending attack, report the explosions and plot the path of the deadly nuclear fallout.

The posts where grouped in clusters of 3-4 with a main master post in each cluster. The master post had a VHF radio as well as the land-line based loud speaker telephone which ensured that communication was possible from all posts to the group HQ’s. To give protection from the fall-out of a nuclear attack these monitoring rooms were constructed 15ft underground, usually at the location of a pre-existing World War 2 post. The underground room measured 15ft by 7ft and was manned by 2-3 staff. The vast majority of the staff was unpaid volunteers with only senior staff and scientific officers at group HQ’s being salaried staff.

In 1968 the Corps was re-organised and about half the posts were closed. In Sept 1991 the remaining 872 posts were stood down and were abandoned. All items were removed and the posts securely locked and alarmed.

The site at Eccleston Hill was on land which is now the Carmel College playing fields near to the ‘red rocks’ and closed in 1991. The Billinge site is located close to the Beacon and closed in 1968 however some of the the surface structures are still visible today.

If anyone has any photographs or memories of working at these sites please can you contact Ian Griffiths via the St Helens Star Coffey Time column?

Tea anyone?

It is a shame though, about the fact that it makes the atmosphere harder for new people who actually do stumble on this place and actually want to learn something about BDSM or PE dynamics. If you were brand new, would this be the climate where you would want to be to ask a legitimate question? A board where some jerk is literally going out of his way to make sure that every screen name is suspected of being from the same manipulative <expletive removed> who couldn't care less if his antics make everyone suspect of anybody new? His grudge is so big he couldn't care less about that.

Exactly. This came up in another discussion briefly a few weeks ago, someone asked me what was the point of being annoyed with the socks, just ignore them, no biggie. But this is why. I fully believe that there are people who are not posting because they are intimidated by this. Makes the whole forum look like a big nonsensical playground for morons.

That's true but I wouldn't blame the sock person for all that you two. There are after all plenty of legitimate, nonsensical morons in here as well.
Have you seen P&R debating the nature of space-time? It's like watching a bunch of retards trying to fuck a doorknob... but to the point I think it's a microcosim of the site in general. Many have nothing meaningfull to add or no real expertise, but they have an opinion and a keyboard. It's a bdsm forum, but it could be a lawn maintence forum for all it would matter, most people just want someone to talk to them.
The socks are slightly annoying sure, but almost laughable. It's many poster's rampant need to validate themselves on here I find disturbing. =| The whole place is roiling in dysfunction lol. The socks are just another thing thrown in with the wash.

Debating space-time is kind of above my pay grade. Unless it's a Star Trek thread, of course.

Sure. It could be any forum. However, if a person poisons the lawn, you just get new grass. It's harder to rebuild a kink community when one person sets out to destroy it. One lying, manipulative fuck can destroy everything that good people try to build. I guess that's why I don't have a taste for it. I don't expect it to go well on the palate any time soon.

Yer, that guy does seem to have some emotional or personality issues and wants to... I duno, make other people pay for in some confusing way I guess =| but I'm saying the 'climate' of negativity towards new posters that you're saying is a result of the socks I can remember being around long before this recent nonsense. But I don't want to sound like a climate denier >.< it's probably a factor lol

I've kinda been wondering if he wanted to 'destroy' the place or make it unplesent etc... why do it in such a ineffectual way? Come on man, drop some 'C bombs', get racist... Anything lol. It's like being pecked to death by ducks. (StarTrek refference =P)
Which raises a more pertinent question.

Was Janeway a Domme? @_@

Janeway? I'd say Domme. Troi was a sub. Riker was a switch with D tendencies. Worf, both predator and prey, not to mention one hell of a masochist when turned on the right way. Don't know if I'd have survived a Vulcun pon farr but I'd damn sure go out smiling if I tried.

Interesting. I actually thought Janeway was a well written character for Star Trek, a female leader who wasn't just a mock male, or butch but actually led as a woman. That was my take anyway. I've got another question! (For anyone)

What Star Trek character do you most identify with?

Tribbles. I'm round, fury, and totally into the idea of using all my energy for reproduction.

I haven't really thought about which Star Trek character I identify with.

I am, however, completely convinced that the idea for tribbles came from someone (perhaps Roddenberry, himself) who had either a long haired cat or dog, and came up with the idea for the look of them after having brushed their pet out. Just a big ball of excess fur. I always thought it was cute the way the little things became a fan favorite even years after the original episode had aired. Have to admit, they were/are kind of cute little things and I don't recall any mention of them taking a poo on the carpet.

I'm going to say Picard for me. Unlike Kirk, Picard dosen't seem to need to fuck every species in sight... He's a bit more reserved, has a bit of class, seems to be less impulsive and a bit better educated lol
I think I'd be pretty content reading a book, maybe listening to some music while savouring an expensive alien ale in my quarters lol

Very nice choice, really. Though, to be fair, we have to look at the time periods that Kirk and Picard were respective captains in relationship to the viewing audience. In the sixties, viewers wanted to see a rouge captain who was out having conquests with, <cough> other life forms. By the nineties, viewers were ready to have someone more refined.

Have to admit, I've always liked Patrick Stewart. Not only is his work good, he's said to have a great disposition, who can both speak out about social issues, while not taking himself overly serious. I'm sure he was much more fun to work with than Shatner ever was.
