MrRodgers -> I was lukewarm over the nuke deal...now I am cold (1/1/2016 8:40:08 PM)

There is now almost no doubt that the nuclear accord will go into effect. But the past few days have been full of sobering reminders that the grander objective of that deal — some gradual steps toward an era of wary cooperation, or at least a cessation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran — remains a long way away.

Just last week, the Republican-led Congress inserted new rules into the budget signed by Mr. Obama that were clearly intended to discourage foreigners from doing business with Tehran. Then on Saturday, the Iranian Navy harassed an American aircraft carrier and a French frigate in the Strait of Hormuz, launching rockets that passed within 1,500 yards of the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman. It seemed an act somewhere between recklessness and outright aggression.

A senior administration official said Wednesday night that the United States had been “looking for some time at options for additional actions related to Iran’s ballistic missile program based on our continued concerns about its activities,” including the missile tests. “As always, we keep Congress informed about issues related to Iran sanctions, and will continue to do so as we work through remaining issues.”

The rockets, Navy officials said, also came dangerously close to commercial ships.

“It’s the equivalent of walking onto I-95 and deciding to have a weapons test,” said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, a spokesman for the Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

In a written statement, the Navy called the Iranian military action “unsafe, unprofessional and inconsistent with international maritime law.”

Did you read the treaty? Its only 159 pages long....

In fact, its not even 159 pages if one were to condense things, reset margins from two inches to one inch, and remove the front and back sections (leaving only the 'guts' of the document). Scales down to about 30 pages. If the topic is REALLY important MrRodgers, I would highly suggest you take the time to read the treaty. Iran can play little games like this without violation. However, those 'games' do come close to the 'line that breaks the treaty'. Tehran knows very well if that treaty is broken by their actions (or by the actions of their uncontrolled people), the sanctions that were once in place come back. Not only do those sanctions activate, but even heavily level sanctions are added (further destroying what flimsy economy they have now). It would make the restrictions that were once on Saddam's Iraq look simple by comparison.

The action is more for the government to look strong rather then act out in aggression. Basically, its political theater on their end. Much like Mr. Putin's planes flying near to Alaska. The Iranian military understands in very clear terms that exciting the US Military to much would mean a full scale surprise attack. One they could not resist on any level. The treaty is there to keep that level of aggression from spiraling out of hand. Of course if it does, they will not have just the United States to deal with, but many other big nations.

Its something to watch but not get to alarmed about once you understand their motivation.

The fact of the matter, is that irrespective of the treaty's specific details, one does not fire ballistic missiles into the Straight of Hormuz with it even a little crowded with commercial ships let alone within 1500 yards of a US carrier. Treaty or no treaty.

What part of “It’s the equivalent of walking onto I-95 and deciding to have a weapons test,” said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, a spokesman for the Navy’s Fifth Fleet. Do you not understand ?

Furthermore, l don't like all of the details we didn't get every bit as much as the ones...we did get.

Well then just do to them what China did to the US over US actions in the South China sea.

At no point did he say that the nuke treaty contained language that created peaceful and harmonious relations. However, the treaty could have, and some may have been hoping it would have, created an atmosphere where Iran and the US (among others) might actually start getting along better and there be less friction between the two nations. This latest incident is evidence that the friction is still going to be there, even though the treaty is all but in effect. This is less about the treaty, and more about what the treaty might have been a step towards.
