12 of our soldiers are trapped after one U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded during a joint U.S.-Afghan Special Operations mission in Marjah, Afghanistan, Remember when the genius in the White House declared, “Afghanistan is not going to be a source of terrorist attacks again.”

One member of the U.S. armed forces was killed and two others were wounded on Tuesday in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, the site of fierce fighting between Taliban and American-backed Afghan government forces, the U.S. military said. The situation is fluid.

This despite Obama’s pro-Taliban Afghan policy.

When Obama took office, the Taliban numbered 11,000 (source) and in 2014 that number increased six fold to over 60,000 (source).

For the whole of Obama’s presidency, he strong-armed former president Hamid Karzai into partnering with the Taliban, and Obama used the NATO summit to pressure the Afghan leader to engage with greater urgency with the Taliban about a ‘political settlement’ in Afghanistan.

The Obama administration has insisted that Taliban not a terrorist group. The slaughter of moderate Afghans, the gassing of girls schools, their brutal treatment of women, imposing the vicious sharia, bombing of markets, police stations and schools — what exactly is Obama’s definition of a terrorist?

According to the United Nations, the Taliban and their allies were responsible for 75% of Afghan civilian casualties in 2010, 80% in 2011, and 80% in 2012.

More than a dozen U.S. Army special operations soldiers are trapped in Marjah, Afghanistan, taking cover in a compound surrounded by enemy fire and hostile Taliban fighters after a U.S. special operations solider was killed earlier in the day, senior U.S. defense officials told Fox News late Tuesday.

A U.S. official described the “harrowing” scene to Fox News, saying there were enemy forces surrounding the compound in which the special operations team sought refuge.

“On the map there is one green dot representing friendly forces stuck in the compound, and around it is a sea of red [representing hostile forces],” the official told Fox News.

A U.S. military “quick reaction force” of reinforcements arrived late Tuesday and evacuated the U.S. special operations soldier killed in action, and the two wounded Americans in the compound, according to a U.S. defense official.

The crew of the disabled helicopter also evacuated safely, the official said.

The rest of the U.S. special operations team remain in the compound to secure the damaged HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter in an area surrounded by Taliban fighters.

An AC-130 gunship has been called in for air cover as the U.S. troops now wait out the night.

Earlier in the day, two USAF HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters were sent to rescue the U.S. special operations team. One of the helicopters took fire and waved off the mission and flew back to base.

The other helicopter’s blades struck the wall of the compound while attempting a rescue of the special operations team, according to defense officials who compared the scene to one similar to the helicopter crash inside Usama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on the mission to kill the Al Qaeda leader in May 2011.

The joint U.S. and Afghan special operations team was sent to Marjah to clear the area of Taliban fighters, who have retaken most of the town since November.

There were nine airstrikes on Tuesday in support of a clearing operation.

Earlier in the day, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook confirmed to reporters that the fighting in Marjah remains ongoing.

“There’s fighting on the ground as we speak,” said Cook.

“Everything’s being done to secure the safety of those Americans and the Afghan forces,” he added.

The Taliban in recent weeks has focused its efforts on retaking parts of Helmand, and the U.S. has countered with U.S. special operations forces working with Afghan troops.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Seven years after 9/11, al Qaida and its allies are gaining ground across the region where the plot was hatched, staging their most lethal attacks yet against NATO forces and posing a growing threat to the U.S.-backed governments in Afghanistan and nuclear-armed Pakistan.

While there have been no new strikes on the U.S. homeland, the Islamic insurrection inspired by Osama bin Laden has claimed thousands of casualties and displaced tens of thousands of people and shows no sign of slackening in the face of history's most powerful military alliance.

The insurgency now stretches from Afghanistan's border with Iran through the southern half of the country. The Taliban now are able to interdict three of the four major highways that connect Kabul, the capital, to the rest of the country.

"I am not convinced we are winning it in Afghanistan," Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, conceded before a congressional committee on Tuesday.

Experts inside and outside the U.S. government agreed that a key reason for the resurgence is a growing popular sympathy for the militants because an over-reliance on the use of force, especially airpower, by NATO has killed hundreds of civilians.

Despite killing many more civilians than the allies have, the insurgents are also winning the all important "information war" for the hearts and minds of the region's deeply religious Muslims, U.S. military officials conceded.

The insurgents' sophisticated propaganda machinery exaggerates civilian casualties caused by foreign forces and reinforces perceptions fueled by U.S. abuses against captured detainees that the Bush administration is waging a war against Islam.

Pakistan has seen an explosion in extremist violence following a succession of U.S.-funded offensives against al Qaida and other militants in the tribal region.

The operations fueled the emergence of Pakistani militant groups that banded together into the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, or TTP, which Pakistan's Interior Ministry chief, Rehman Malik, recently conceded is under al Qaida's control.

The TTP has routed Pakistani security forces, imposed strict Islamic law across the tribal region and extended its reach deep into the country through a campaign of intimidation and violence that has claimed thousands of lives, including that of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December.

This is one of the reasons that we are inalterably heading to a clash of civilizations. In the decades from '80 - 2000, there was a significant disconnect between muslim rulers and the muslim street.
The rulers wanted to accept westnen perks, all the while not rebuking or containing islamic fundamentalism. The predictable result is the eventual arab spring.

The afghan government makes insufficient effort to counter islamist propaganda. Even if we had boots on the ground I doubt that we could we could win hearts and minds. But the cost of pulling the boots on the ground is that the islamists will continue to gain power and will eventually overthrow the afghan government. The insurgents get too much aid from pakistan, iran, and muslim fundamentalists for the government to reverse by itself.

Kharzid's government was propped up at no small cost to the american people, in order to end the training camps there. By pulling the troops, Obama pretty much ensures that afghanistan will fall. As you say - mission accomplished. And the muslim radicals will have more more bases, more money and more attention to spend elsewhere.

Not at all.

What you are seeing in the Middle East is a carbon copy of Western nations from years gone by: armed insurrection as the answer to self-determination.

That's what we did when we trying to work things out.

You turn up in someone else's country and start shouting the odds, then you will be on the wrong end of a backlash at some point - no matter the country in whatever part of the world.

Not at all.

What you are seeing in the Middle East is a carbon copy of Western nations from years gone by: armed insurrection as the answer to self-determination.

That's what we did when we trying to work things out.

You turn up in someone else's country and start shouting the odds, then you will be on the wrong end of a backlash at some point - no matter the country in whatever part of the world.



But I'm not talking about what I"m seeing in the middle east, exactly.


What we are seeing is an increasingly populous faith, that is becoming progressively more radicalized. They additionally have more money, better weapons, etc.
And a populace that is forgetting recent history ( wars of 67, 73, etc) and has recovered from the decline of the ottoman empire etc. They have been preached to by firebrand leaders
and believe they can 'take' us. As exemplified by Iran, Turkey etc.

Simultaneously you are seeing a weakening of western actors (US, UK) etc. that give the appearance of being weak and hence invite attack.

The clash of civilizations happens all the time. But this is heading for a big one.

The only thing I've seen is a facebook entry saying the troops were evacuated Jan7.

Don't expect you care, but I hope they're ok, as well as the civilians in Marjah.

Status: offline 		If you take the wide view of this, those guys made a mistake signing up for the US military. whatever happens to them when they go to another country is just too bad. Too fucking bad. Now get up in arms. And Bengazi, who the fuck was the brainiac who figured out to put an embassy in a hostile county. Just because you THINK the governemnt is on your side, do you forget about the PEOPLE ? Apparently.

Why are they in Afghanistan ? To promote a US friendly regime to gain control of land on which there shall be a pipeline, if they get their way. This is all for the oil companies anyway.

Tell your children not to enlist. It is the stupidest thing a person can do. First of all they risk your life to make money, and that really is all it is. Then when they are through with you they don't give a fuck and will have hack doctors cut you up so you are no longer a liability.

The only good in going into the military is as training to become a mercenary. Work for Blackwater or something. That is if you survive agent orange, or depleted uranium or who knows WTF else. Like the chemical weapons they sold to the enemy.

I can't agree.

What we actually see is say 200 people on the news burning flags. The message is they're all mad, except it's 200 people. The power of advertising.

What we also see is some pretty barbarous things, such as stoning people and the like; but then that has nothing to do with the 'clash of civilisations'. It is what they do in a few parts of the muslim world to instill discipline and deter crime. I don't agree with it, but not my business.

And, what we see is that the 'clash of civilisations' is no such thing. They go to work, we go to work; they have jobs, we have jobs; they sleep, we sleep; they have wives, we have wivesw; they have some leisure time which they probably spend reading or something, so do we.

When you say 'clash of civilisations', it is actually someone setting up shop where they don't belong and someone else reacting.

Clashes of civilizations occur all the time without realestate. They happen in the economic arena (Iran/Saudi Arabia) they happen in the realm of ideas (capitalism vs communism) the happen in the wars of cutlture - (American hip hop banned from Iran, Al-Jazeira being formed to promote arab newscasting).

"The seven Americans inside quickly barricaded themselves in locked rooms. A distress call was sent to the embassy in Tripoli and to Washington. The attackers dumped diesel fuel around the grounds and set it alight.

Over at the Annex, the security team was told to grab their gear and assemble. They loaded guns and body armor into a waiting armored car as they watched flames rise from the nearby outpost.

A lot of politicians don’t realize that we were all in the military and we know a lot of the military guys, and they tell us things.
Before they could leave, however, the men were inexplicably told to “stand down” by Bob, the station chief. He preferred to let a friendly Libyan militia respond. (A congressional inquiry later concluded there was no evidence a “stand down” order was issued, but the “13 Hours” men say it happened.)

As they helplessly waited, a call from the outpost came over the radio: “If you don’t get here soon, we’re all going to die.” The group took matters into its own hands. The three contractors were also joined by ex-SEALs Tyrone Woods and “Jack Silva” (played by “The Office alum John Krasinki in the film) and former Marine “Dave Benton,” both pseudonymous names because their real identities have not been revealed."



So who do you believe - the clinton and their flunkies who said no stand down order was issued - or the men that were there that says there was.

Of course, its interesting that the FOI requests for people demoted in the three months after the benghazi attack have still no response...
