I'm pregnant (ish) and I'm smoking 60 a day just to piss these people off.

CoeliaConcordia -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/7/2006 4:17:19 AM)

I've just lit up a full strength Capstan, I chain smoke,  and I am blowing the smoke towards my monitor, as I type. I am also working on being pregnant, as I type.

SirKenin -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/7/2006 6:03:39 AM)

I do know pretty much for a fact that smoking can harm children.  My wife and I smoked in the house with our two.  They both had breathing problems.  We were told by the doctors that they had asthma and were put on inhalers.  We quit, and magically the problem just disappeared, overnight.  They have never had a problem since.

By petty I mean, I would think it would be common sense to not blow smoke at your kids.  No one would have to create a law which told me 'hey, don't purposely harm your daughter".  I don't think every ailment should be chalked up as child abuse, and people are going too far, and employers should have no say in personal lifestyle.... and yes, those are problems.  But sometimes, it is abuse.  I have seen parents smoke around asthmatic kids in their cars... not abuse?  Smoking around  newborns whose lungs are never fully developed.... not abuse?

Laws are created like this  because people apparently do need to be told such things... and now some of these laws are being abused.  Where is the happy medium.  If parents want to smoke.. fine, but don't make your kids suffer.

You reply here caused me to do some serious research. Here is a link to thread that resulted from this thread and that research:

No shit!!

SCORPIOXXX -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/7/2006 8:13:05 AM)

GENERAL REPLY TO ALL...

I smoke... I don't smoke around kids or when people are eating -- it's called good manners and consideration! As for the rabid anti-smokers: why do all of you object to restaurant and bars where smoking is allowed? Would you rather we die of pneumonia from having to smoke outside in th rain??? As for the line about employees' health: go to the back alley of any restaurant or bar and you'll find the staff smoking away -- I know because I worked in the industry!

As with so many Puritan strains in America, smokers are being scapegoated because they are cheap easy targets! Little of the cig tax money goes to smokers issues -- just grants for so called researchers... Let's tax by $5 all the McD's and other fast food places items! Tax teh drycleaners by $5 an item (carcinogens in the process), over-tax cars and diesel buses... the list of noxious contributors could go on and on... BUT YOU NON-SMOKERS DON'T STOP DRIVING, DO YOU??!??!??? Blyaaack...

If you're anti-smoking and you drive a solar powered car, I salute your cause.

If you're anti-smoking and infecting my lungs with masses of carbon monoxide, I really fail to see where your argument can be anything but sheer hypocrisy.

Actually I have a phobia of driving... so you know I guess I am not a hypocrite after all, I do not drive ever...LOL

Goddam Meatcleaver, no wonder this thread is SO LONG, you are posting on it. Do you think you can reach 75 pages?

You shouldn't call that "magical," you should call it cause and effect.

LaTigresse -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/7/2006 3:54:33 PM)

Welllllllllll I will say that I am tired and grumpy and want some FIRST HAND smoke but for some stupid silly reason it is illegal here so I cannot just stop at the Tobacco Bowl and buy what I want therefor I shall have to settle for a glass of wine when I get home. DAMMIT!

twicehappy -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/7/2006 6:35:11 PM)

Reading both this thread and the government to ban obesity thread i've come across numerous references to the fact that second hand smoke causes disease and death. Ok fine, can anyone provide me with statics on this from a reliable source like the CDC or NIH?

The Weekly World News did report that a pregnant man gave birth.

What was the sex?  Was it healthy?  What was it's birth weight? What did you name it?

I WANT DETAILS!

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

Not pleasant reading.

I only blow smoke toward people who are up my butt about MY choice to smoke, I always ask those who accompany places if my smoking with offend (if so, I do excuse myself either away from them or outdoors if no other option is available to me), I put my "outdoor" smokes out in the dirt, smush it with my foot and put the butt into the pack until I have access to a trash recepticle...unlike fast food eaters, beer drinkers, and along the road snackers, people with undisciplined children and teens, and inconsiderate smokers and non-smokers who are in every neighborhood on every community street who toss their trash willy-nilly out the door of their car at a stop sign...who cares if someone lives there... or along the highways.
Yes, it is unacceptable to repay in kind in regard to being ill-treated by others, however, I really believe they are treating me the way they want me to treat them and so I give them what the appear to be begging me to do...corner or nag me into ire, and this dragon will breathe smoke...

Hello A/all,

I dont really have much of a problem with people smoking around me.  I dont let them smoke in my house, but I will go out on the porch with them while they smoke.  If they are smoking in my Esteemed Personal Space I take the road less travelled and relocate said EPS to some other smoke-free environment if it bothers me.

But why do so many smokers think that the world (including my yard) is their FREAKING ASHTRAY?  I dont throw my used snot tissues or leftover engine oil in their yard, nor do I waltz in and defecate or urinate in their Cheerios, but I end up spending half my Saturday picking up their cigarette butts that litter the yard and sidewalk and street in front of my house.  Is it too much to ask smokers to have a modicum of social courtesy and respect for other people and use a trash can for what it was made for?

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

Sinergy

p.s. I suck deisel fumes at work all day long, If lung cancer doesnt kill me, I suspect my propensity for working the other job which requires repeated vicious kicks to my head will.  One life, one death.  I can work with that.  I just dont want to spend what life I am graced with picking up other people's cigarette butts.

p.p.s  On another note, the genitalia of the few smokers I have dated have an odd, almost unpleasant taste, but as usual, that is just me and I could be wrong.

LOL, I swear, if I had to give birth, I'd spend my entire life as a virgin with my legs crossed tighter than a camels arse in a sandstorm.

KatyLied...back to the auto driving thing....sorry, I pport your right to say your peace and will die to insure you have it...but millions more people are driving cars that are destroying not only the health of every living thing on the face of the earth; "But when it impacts the health of other people it is a public concern." Hmmmm....how many fingers pointing back?

I used to live 60 minutes away from one job, and 90 minutes away from the other.  When I considered the costs to society I relocated back to being 10 minutes away from one job and 30 away from the other.

I am looking in to buying a Vespa scooter to lower my emissions coeffecient even further.

That said, I spend many days idling a smelly deisel tractor as we unload huge cargo ships, which put the emissions of 100,000 cars per day into the air, in the harbor.

Im not sure what the solution is, but my starving to death in poverty is not really one I can live with.

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

yawns....i do not care what any adult does as long as it only affects them.."thinning the  herd" i say....

twicehappy -> RE: Second hand smoke (8/8/2006 4:39:26 AM)

Sorry Lorelei, i checked every one and not one of them shows any proof, only statements that second hand smoke carrys the same chemicals as first hand smoke. By proof i mean incontravertable evidence that the second hand smoke was the cause.

Can you find one autopsy report that states the cause of death was second hand smoke?

Can you produce one medical record that states that the illness being treated was caused by second hand smoke?

The only thing your sites provided was the same drivel that we hear from the anti smoking campains, that it is bad for you. I want proof, statistics that are based on identifiable causes, not guesses.

If I found evidence of a child that had died of an asthma attack triggered by cigarettes would you stop asserting that second hand smoke is good for me? Geesh, as someone that smoked for 23 years and felt like I was on the road to lung cancer when I quit I can tell you it makes me want to puke everytime I smell that shit. Nicotine is a POISON used in pesticides and herbicides. It kills tomatoe plants. I am beginning to feel like I am in the twightlight zone when George Bush claimed arsenic was good for me because it occurs naturally... geesh.

Never did i state it was bad for you, what i stated is that soooo many make the statement that it causes disease or kills you.

If you showed me proof that said child died from an astma attack triggered by second hand smoke what you would in essence be showing me is that the child died of asthma. Second hand smoke did not give him asthma in the first place.

The fact is that there is no proof that second hand smoke does any of what the anti smokers state.

Provide me with one death certificate that lists second hand smoke as the primary or underlying cause and i will shut up.

I can provide you with death certificates that state a heart attack was the cause of death with the underlying cause being recorded as morbid obesity.
