Well their names are lost to the ancient past but more recent centuries have given us iconic entities such as Countess Elizabeth Bathory and the Marquis Donatien de Sade. There are many others both real and mythical who are deified by BDSM practitioners in the lifestyle today. they are mostly dominant powerful women with much influence.

Angelina Jolie, Joan Jett, Penn Jillette,Rihanna, Lana, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, Carman Electra, Madonna,Sarah Ferguson, Catherine Zeta Jones,Brook Burke, Oprah Winfrey, Diora Bird,Carrie Fisher,Ellen De Generes, Wanda Sykes, Therr#e is even a Hollywood Celebrity BDSM club situated in the Beverley Hills.

I've never come across anything that remotely hints towards Bathory being into D/s.

People have been getting off on inflicting/giving pain and being in various power-exchange relationships since the ancient world; it is only in relatively modern times that labels have been used to describe what people prefer and what people do. The flogging depiction in the Tomba Della Fustigatione could be a scene of flogging. (link). On the other hand however, there is no context for this. Is it someone willingly consenting to what is going on (aka, kink) or is it an entirely unconsented encounter (rape/punishment).

So I'd say that probably the better question would perhaps be 'who were the first iconic people associated with modern BDSM' rather than the equivalent of 'who were the first people to get their hinky side going'.

BDSM occurred before the wheel.

Yes BDSM has been around as long as man.

For 20th century history read "The History & Arts of the Dominatrix" By Anne O Nomis, chapter 3. You will find BDSM was very much alive and well in the early 1900s.

Betty Page in the 60s is probably one of the most famous iconic BDSM pin girls.
