self stitching? yikes! I woke the dead with my screams when I had to use super-glue to close a wound. It burned like a (insert expletive here).

Major kudos for having the fortitude to stitch yourself up :)

Thanks, I had the cream though... but even so, it was a bit exhausting. I haven't tried super glue, but I've used some kind of vetenary quickclot before and that was a pretty stingy. =x What made you want to superglue it? I've heard it works ok in a pinch.

Cyanoacrylate glue, also known as Superglue is also used commonly in the medical industry and for surgical procedures. It adheres to skin very well.

Also, apparently tattoo artist don't come equipped with laughing gas, or any anesthetics to knock one out. Bad call, that. Surely there would be more people getting them, if one could simply go to sleep and wake up with lovely artwork on their skin! I'd be in for that!

First find a reputable tattoo shop and talk to them.
There are numbing creams specifically for tattoos. Talk to the tattoo shop about it. Some shops are okay with it. Others are not. Some traditionalist feel that you need to endure the pain. Others do not. So talk to the shop and see what they recommend and have had success with.

I was in my 50's when I got my first (and last) tattoo.
After checking out several designs I opted to merge a couple and have it poked out on my back between my shoulder blades. It is mostly tribal, a black band of thorns from end to end with a red heart in the center, and a crack through the heart with a blood drop dripping from the closest thorn.
I didn't want words. Words feel girly to me and this expression seemed more primal.
I had it put on my back so I would not be reminded which seems odd considering it is a permanent mark. But for me it was done for symbolism, a blood letting from something that left a major impact on my life.
It took a 2 or 3 hours with a lot of that work in outlining which is the bloody part.
I think by having it done where I don't see it every moment has prevented me from wanting another.
Yes it did hurt when that first barrage of needles occurred. But it was cathartic.
Or maybe it is because it is not fluffy that I don't crave another.
My daughter has 6 small and cutesy ones, all visible

That sounds amazing, Missokyst! I'd like to find something meaningful like that for me.
My oldest son has my first name across his chest, and my youngest has my full (first, middle and last) name on his side.
I told them most guys just get MOM and call it good, then I told them I wasn't dead yet! Stop memorializing me before my time!

I have a Ralph Steadman bat on my left hip. My best friend has a matching one.

I hate needles. Like pass out, drama at the hospital hate needles. Tears, and flinching and juice box needing hate them. BUT I have small veins- and my whole life not one person has stuck me on the first try. Plus- what scares me is the possibility of an air embolism. Or like...in my head I'm like CANT THE NEEDLE JUST BREAK OFF IN ME!? I mean you don't know what they are injecting you with REALLY? Why don't I use needles in play? I simply don't like play that LIKELY involves that much blood. BASICALLY? Blood is what actually freaks me out.

So a tattoo I thought I would lose it- however- to me- it was very "unneedley". It feels more like a rubber band being snapped on your skin. I straight up LOVED it. It was hot. The second he started I was like...THAT is what it feels like?! I'm into that. I did get it on an easy, fatty part of me, and a couple times it hurt more than that, but over all I was really buzzy and happy, and turned on.

It is addicting for me- but I'm a stingy bitch with my money so I don't have another yet- I do want more though. In a bad way.

I love mine. I LOVE it. I smile whenever I see it. But I love the artwork- take the time to do that, and take the time to find a tat artist you like.

I can't afford any addictions, so one and done for me. Assuming I ever find anything I want to wear for the rest of my life.

I have been wearing a triquetra pendant forever, and I ran across a double triquetra that looks (to me) like one form hugging the other and Immediately felt it represented an eternal love of family. Mostly a mother for her child, but also love for the family we make for ourselves and embrace. I think I'll get that one. It's small, simple and I loved it the first time I saw it.

Here then is the Tatto you wanted squire!

All of these tattoo stores come highly recommended and have their own short advertising videos. Truely fantastic tattooes can be had for little cost and very memorable occassions also.

Wow, that was great. Is it only military bands which are called tattoes (sp?) or is it a particular style of band, like we'd call a marching band? Interesting.

I have a very small butterfly on my left shoulder that was originally a heart:
I used to rather I didn't have it (teenage choice years ago)
Now I really like it, it's just of who I am. My daughter and I plan on getting tiny matching tattoos one day.
I didn't think it hurt at all. Maybe a tad bit uncomfortable. Getting my ears pierced was worse then the tattoo.

Many use lidocaine ointment to numb the skin. In some areas that is OTC and in some it is prescription. But, rather easy to get.

I can't think of tattoos without thinking of a shipmate out in Hawaii. He fell in love with a Samoan girl. He was so smitten; he didn't ask questions when he agreed to a traditional Samoan wedding ceremony. The ceremony lasted five days and he was tattooed with bamboo driven by a small hammer. He came out of his wedding tattooed from his waist to knees. If they ever divorce does he have to remove the tattoos?

Yup.
And I went and got my nose pierced, and I miss it. So much. I had to take it out for a dumb job. However, that was so hard and scary.

Actually, a tattoo need not be permanent.

There is an inexpensive, albeit painful as all hell, to remove a tattoo yourself.

You need a Datsan B210 hatch back with the original core radiator, and then just get the damn thing to over heat. Once the temp has reached a critical point, pop the hood and allow the faulty radiator design do the rest, just allow the part of the body with the tattoo to hover over the radiator cap while you wait for the results.

You see, the pressure in the radiator will blow the neck and radiator cap off the radiator, thereby releasing the contents, which when hitting the skin where the tattoo is located, will cause 3rd degree steam burns effectively removing the tattoo.

As a side note, it will also remove wanted and unwanted body hair as well.

While it was the unintentional proximity to such a vehicle (my youngest sister's car) at her request to try and help her with the situation with said vehicle, and all I had actually done was pop the hood and reach for the neat little thing that the factory provided to hood said hood up, my arm passed the critical point at the critical time resulting in the complete removal of a snake that began at my right wrist, up my arm and across my chest.

It also removed my chest hair, my beard, my mustache and about four square inches of hair on the right side of my head.

Now eventually the all lost hair grew back (2 years of shaving my head) and 8 years to regain the ability to regrow a full beard.

While effective, it is not a technique I would recommend, even if you happen to be a masochist.

However, I can say with experience that the technique of application as used in the majority of modern tattoo shops is less painful than if you decide to find an old school Japanese tattoo artist.

a short time ago here, tattoo outfits were available fairly cheaply online and it was reported in the paper that a couple of local girls went home from school to proudly show their parents the new tattoos they had acquired from a boy at school. They weren't very well done for one thing and they proclaimed to the world that 'Hells Angles Rule'............he obviously wasn't much good at spelling either. I never did hear the final outcome but I will bet it was more than a little noisy

Know anyone arty? I like origins, original, unique.

Avoid the writing ones for they be utter pants and never forget the classics such as carpe diem – those I believe to be the utter maddest of all mad people and double red alert material – sure that’s a real thing see

Take a picture of your new tattoo and wap it up online. Anyone who mails you with the drivel “your tattoo is hot sexy etc remove from Christmas list and ignore for evermore” Tis why some people upload them and they get whom they ask for, basically.

oh, and always ask someone brutally honest firstly like me...not if i am hammered on cheap Chardonnay though
