There have been many soup operas and the longest running one is the UKs Coronation Street, December 1960 to 2016 to date. Some have been truly outstanding and others mediocre and best forgotten. Some of you may have lived in more than one English speaking nation and so seen many different cultural soup operas. So what is your favorite top 3 in preferential order please and what made you keep watching them? Some of them may be forgotten and the list may jog a persons memory.

None of the above.

And they are SOAP opera's, not soup opera's.

apart from the fact that half the UK ones up until 1988 arent mentioned in the UK list
crossroads, emerdale farm, eastenders, corrie,
Practically all the others were american written soaps
I had never seen any of the american daytime soaps in the UK until I moved here, shame its a cut n paste, list and badly inaccurate, but socks will be sucks.
But then when I were young, we only had two stations, till bb2c came along...then channel 4. in my late teens?

You must have been born quite recently then? They say kids learn quick nowadays. Surfing the net at 1 and staring in porn movies at 2.

You can't watch SOUP on TV!!!
And there's no such thing as a soup opera.

But there again, I didn't expect anything better from a sock.

You are a silly woman! Socks will be sucks? What are you on about? The list appeared comprehensive but for some reason important ones with iconic stature were indeed let out. I mentioned Coronation Street. Many go back before we were born and even predate television. If you can think of one's not mentioned then state them in a thread?

Not a single Kids TV soap is mentioned anywhere.

Or do you not believe in kids soaps?

Nope. You just like to see your posts instead of having anything sensible to contribute.

Yes there is I just invented soup opera. True both soap and soup are bizarre names for TV programs that are a continuation from one crisis to the next in a series of follow on episodes. I wonder who coined the phrase and why?

In 1933, Procter and Gamble began sponsering first radio and then daytime television dramas. P&G's major item they made at the time was laundry soap. And they were one of the largest laundry soap makers. The name Soap Opera quickly was coined P&G was a major sponsor of daytime television dramas from the 30's to the 2000's.

First of all Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was a parody of a soap opera.
As was Soap (appropriately not listed).
I don't see Dark Shadows on the list.

And at various points, I have watched ones on NBC: Days of Our Lives, The Doctors, Search for Tomorrow (which ended on NBC) Another World and it's spin-offs: Somerset and Texas, and Passions.
ABC: Ryan's Hope, All My Children, One life to Live, Loving and General Hospital.
CBS: Young and the Restless and Guiding Light.

Daytime soaps introduced us to actors/actresses such as Alec Baldwin and Kathleen Turner, Ted Danson, Demi Moore, Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore, Tommy Lee Jones, Ray Liotta and Kevin bacon among others.
