What's really driving the Republican party though is still a limited government conservatism that is still a structure built around a government that's less invasive, less intrusive, less taxes, less government, more freedom.

We don't always get there by a straight line path. We don't always get there in a direct way, but that is still what drives this party and there's also a major part of the party that is still trying to sort itself out on what the balancing test is between the limited government side, the national defense side, the social conservatism side, and I don't think this other stuff that Trump is toying with is really a part of the mainstream conservative movement by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry Rick, but you and your establishment buddies built that. You cater to racists and white supremacists for decades with dog whistle politics and code words, and sooner someone's going to throw away the whistle for a blow horn. Like it or not, this is your party's base.

And in a general election, Trump’s strongman rhetoric will surely appeal to some of the 39 percent of independents in my poll who identify as authoritarians and the 17 percent of self-identified Democrats who are strong authoritarians.

Take activated authoritarians from across the partisan spectrum and the growing cadre of threatened non-authoritarians, then add them to the base of Republican general election voters, and the potential electoral path to a Trump presidency becomes clearer.

It is time for those who would appeal to our better angels to take his insurgency seriously and stop dismissing his supporters as a small band of the dispossessed.

I could guarantee a GOP win, and many, many more, if Rick Wilson created a strategy to get GOP candidates to sign onto (and follow) a "Say what you mean, and mean what you say" pledge. I think finding a GOP candidate that could do that and not destroy him/herself would guarantee consecutive wins.
