I'm looking around the site and I'm not finding much as far as getting to know people. Only ONE person welcomed me in introductions and while I appreciate her effort, it's kind of a sad showing.

Are people not friendly here? Am I doing something wrong?

If you were new, what would you do to get to know people?

I honestly wish I could help. I gave up trying to "break the ice" on this site MANY years ago.

I know some bad ice breakers.

At the moment it’s just a few regulars of old, the eternally bored, and some others flitting on and off the forums - best I don’t forget Mr Clone who has a habit of posting on the newbie thread.

It’s a pretty friendly bunch, but we do enjoy the odd tar and feathering from time to time.

If you log onto a thread, or a forum, it will show currentish users on it – well, the ones not hidden, i usually see about 1-5 people.

So there really aren’t too many people on the forums and one must ponder why:
1. Lack of credible genuine people who perceive other huwman as an object to be abused. knob-gobbler etc
2. Driven away by the lack of credible contributors…and so on.

Newbie thread- I will welcome anyone who half attempted a sensible profile, has verified pictures, offers free cake etc. If I click on other profiles and they have stolen pictures, of dubious integrity, everyone is an object mentality and they should fall to their knees, and so on. I am not big on welcoming those.

i am also curious as to whether you have welcomed any of the newbies

The vast majority who write an introduction are here once, never to return again. I used to try to say hello to people. It's just not worth the effort unless they show they want to join in. Apparently you are the exception and want to participate here. Welcome. Glad to have you. We need new people on here who are not socks.

Participating on the forums will get you noticed. Just try to ignore the socks who are here to just cause trouble. If you read a bit you'll get to know those who are members here.

You did not do anything wrong. The forums are going through a bit of troubling times recently. Hopefully it all gets fixed one of these days. I'm a forum juinkie, and have been for nearly 20 years on various forums. Lately my forum of choice is backyardchickens.com. The fighting there is limited to the best way to feed a hen or whether to use a heat lamp in winter or not.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

I would post an Ice Breaker Thread with a fun question for everyone to ask. Something like "If you could invite four famous people to dinner, who would you choose and why?"

I'll second the great profile comment. Clear and cogent.

Unfortunately you've joined at a bad time. We have a nut around who is making new profiles at the rate of several a day and using them to fill the forums with drivel. it was mildly amusing at first to see him respond to himself but at this point, we're wary of new folks for fear they'll turn out to be yet another sock puppet.

That would make a VERY interesting thread on it's own Doc................................My first would be Erwin Rommel. He wrote a book on Infantry tactics that is still read today and I would like to ask him what he considered went wrong so badly with his later campaigns

That is easy. The things that went wrong were
A The Allies took control of the air.
B The Allies took control of the sea.
C Hitler would not allow him the freedom he needed to execute his methods.
D He was consistantly outnumbered by a better supplied enemy. At El Alamein for example Montgomery had him outnumbered 4-1 in manpower and nearly 10-1 in tanks. Further Rommel was short on gas and the English had plenty. On top of this Hitler would not permit him to retreat and shorten his supply lines. If this wasn't enough 2/3 of his troops were Italians.

He always said that he figured it must be Germany's turn to be weighed down by the Italians. The allies got saddled with them the previous go-around. For a guy who was so up on infantry and fought so well in the first war and the earlier part of the second, it must have been a bitter pill to swallow at the slow realisation of what he was actually looking down in the second.

I don't know what brought me back here but I do have some things to add:

to the OP: "How much does a polar bear weigh? Just enough to break the ice" try that on for size.

For the good doctor: That's not a bad idea and a thread like that should be started.

For Bama: Really? A shot at my people? There's been a lot of evidence to suggest that the reason that Italian soldiers weren't very effective is because of the Italian immigrant population that was fighting for the U.S.

Third cousin's in the Italian side of my family are looked at the way siblings are regarded by the Irish side. The Italians have a very strong (some might say "hyper") sense of family may have something to do with their non-desire to fight.

That and the influence of the brotherhood which doesn't really exist (the mafia) had a lot to do with just how easily Sicily was taken, certainly.
