Assume from the information given that Mary and John know one another. As Jasper 'smelled' Mary before he saw her and that's what drove him.. assume he did not know her and I'd say you got the exact scenario the author had in mind.

So my take away is that no one is a mind reader, and even those who exhibit socially accepted behaviors can be wrong!

Well, that's true. Society appears to consent frequently on the behalf of individuals.. whether we want it to or not. ;)

The power of taken wouldn't work for me in this scenario,

To me, consent matters and Jasper doesn't appear to give a rat's ass as to whether she consented or not. If she didn't get off on this, it would be a clear case of sexual assault.

I'd pick John myself because consent appears to matter to him.

Now, if she's already in a relationship then I think it was Deepak Chopra who said in such cases the thing to do is say 'oh good, the plumbing still works' and then take it home to your partner.

So Mary's wants/desires are not taken into consideration by either man.

Their differing attacks are merely contrasting personality traits; they are being 'true to themselves' but where does that leave Mary?

Yeah, I failed to grasp that John's “knight in shining armor” approach required her consent. In my head, though, her consent is less essential with the chivalrous one than with the ravisher. John's actions are (to my way of thinking) less intrusive, less invasive, less potentially damaging than Jasper's..........easier to manage emotionally.

Mary is in a bitatrouble, so to speak. With Jasper, he will own her... completely. He will take from her all that he desires (which is obviously all that she is, all that she exudes, and all that she gives) and she will be powerless to resist him.

However, John will hand her the world on a gilded platter, he will always cater to her wants and desires. Bend to her will if she chooses to impose it and forever be permissive and hyper-attentive to the point of burdensome.

Soooooo... does she choose the bastard that will consume her or the gentleman that will smother her in a pampered, attentive, permissive life. Life filled with things or filled with passion.

She may have to make John a cuck.

I might fan myself and exclaim how hot that was; but I'd not be running off with either of them.
I would rather take off on my own dragon and find someone who is a little of both as extremes on either side of the experience is exhausting and tiresome.
