We have compulsory voting here too F.D. but if you don't like any of them, you just leave your ballot paper blank or write some obscene message on it and it's called informal ( don't ask me why *smile*) and scrapped. We have three elections due this year I think.................local ( town or city councillors), Federal ( Parliament) and Senate, ( Upper House). The voting paper is about the size of a sheet of wallpaper and you wouldn't trust any name on them to give you a straight answer to the simplest question................................I am trying to make up an obscene limerick to go on mine, or maybe I will just quote Kipling.............."I could not kill; I dared not rob and so I lied to please the mob". It seems very fitting.

I see what you're saying, but I don't see what good it does. And don't get me wrong, I vote every time. I just don't vote for candidates who oppose my most fundamental beliefs. Isn't it less harmful to cast an inconsequential ballot than a counter-productive ballot?

When you refuse to vote for the lesser evil you often get the greater one.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: US elections general thread (2/22/2016 4:01:16 PM)

You have the truth of it there Bama, but when there is little to choose between two teams of liars, thieves and rogues, many people make their own choice, which is to vote informal. I think our last election had a record number of those votes.
At the moment on one side we have a smiling assassin, with no real policy except to stick it to what he regards as the lower classes.
On the other side we have a man with no real substance who wants to stick it to big business and the wealthier end of town but he has the aroma of union corruption surrounding him.
The rest ? They are just there to make up the numbers

About 20 years ago the State of Louisiana had to choose between a Dem (who had previously been driven out of office for coruption) and a Rep ( who the party disavowed because he was, 4 years earlier, the "Grand Imperial Wizard of the KKK), clearly a choice between evils.
The voters there apparently felt it was easier to deal with the crook.
BTW I agreed with their choice.

LOL................I think I am leaning towards your way of thinking there Bama. The 'smiling assassin' here is all front and no substance ( like a Hollywood stage-set). He can talk the talk but when you examine that talk, you find he has actually SAID nothing.
The 'union man' comes across as dumb as dogshit but he is thought to have coerced a whole lot of money from big business which kinda 'disappeared '. The Royal commission couldn't lay a glove on him, but the smell remains all the same. Still, it goes to show he is not as dumb as he seems. If he can do that for the country, he has my vote and I don't really care if he DOES skim his 10% off the top *smile*.

Anyone else having trouble getting the site to display your posts?
The last few days it takes hours to get them to display and then I have had a couple of occasions when it didn't display part or all of my post.

satanscharmer -> RE: US elections general thread (2/22/2016 9:14:58 PM)

I've been having issues today, but mostly load times and problems being redirected.

All my messages tho got thru tho...
Ive started typing posts on a note before I post it.
It saves the monitor being thrown at the wall.

I think every 'democratic' vote should always have a 'None of the above' option.
If that is the winner, the whole process should be scrapped and started again until a clear choice of the people is represented rather than a 'best of the worst' Hobson's choice.

You mean to say that if majority voted, none of the above?
Then where will all the back up candidates come from?
If majority voted none of the above for Sanders and Clintons, they got no more candidates left!

BTW, below are the list of countries with compulsory voting! This "lack of freedom" is not exclusive to us.

Austria
Argentina
Australia
Belgium
Bolivia
Brazil
Chile
Costa Rica
Cyprus
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
Egypt
Fiji
France (senate only)
Gabon
Greece
Guatemala
Honduras
Italy
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Mexico
Nauru
Paraguay
Peru
Philippines
Singapore
Switzerland (Schaffhausen)
Thailand
Turkey
Uruguay

We had a local video that was a comical informative video on how to vote properly. This reminds me, because it showed a dude writing inside the PAP box, "Fuck the PAP". And the video says, yes, you can write that, but remember if you write, "Fuck the PAP" inside the PAP box, it will still count as a vote for the PAP lol, make sure you write it outside the box or on the opposition you are voting for.

If your preferred candidate does not get the nod from their respective party, would you still vote for the party? For instance, if Bernie Sanders is not the Democratic Party's candidate, would you still vote for Hillary just to be in-line with your party, would you choose a different candidate, or would you not vote?

I don't vote just in-line with my party, but those I vote for tend to be within the same party. If I can't have the one I want, I'll pick the one that I side with the most out of the rest. Sometimes it does seem to be voting for the lesser of two evils, it just depends on how you look at it. If I absolutely loathed all the available candidates, I'd be more likely to do a write-in than to not vote altogether.
I do understand why some may not want to vote at all, but it's not something I can bring myself to do.

This is who I'm voting for:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nn4tP7ogWIA

I have lined up my second choice. I'm closer to the middle on the political spectrum and do fully look at all the options, not just the options in my party. If I didn't think Trump was such a huge douchecanoe, I'd consider him more thoroughly and thoughtfully as a second choice.

As I, and I assume most people have never had a candidate they totally agree with (unless they are totally brainwahed) then we alway vote for the lesser of two evils.

If democracy keeps bringing 2 candidates people don't care about to vote for, is it working?

bounty44 -> RE: US elections general thread (2/23/2016 4:47:01 PM)

just dropping in quickly to say---the way things are presently looking, so long as both ted cruz and marco Rubio are in the race, trump's likely to win, and unfortunately, I don't see either one of them dropping out.

I'm reasonably content with all three of the republican candidates. I'd prefer the democrats didn't nominate a crook, but ....

Phydeaux -> RE: US elections general thread (2/23/2016 7:57:12 PM)

The biggest impediment to trump winning would be cruz/rubio unified ticket. but that would likely be "trumped" by a trump/x ticket.

I thought his biggest impediment would be his court case of fraud for Trump University promises that is still on going.
