Until the investigation is complete and all evidence analyzed you or I have no idea who else could be actively involved.

And you've testified at how many trials?

As a technical witness, as a non-technical witness? Have you developed forensic software?

I read an article today saying that was impossible.

How in the world can it be impossible? Apple writes the software....

Because as long as we're not citing articles anything can happen!

Still waiting on your private (or public?) message relaying your bank account info, social media logins, and login to this site.

What are you hiding?

OK, please explain the situations in which you were called as an expert witness and how you came to be an "expert witness".

As there are a multitude of articles regarding this topic I don't think it's unreasonable for a person making claims to cite a source.

Apple has responded to the court order. The US attorneys now have until March 10th to give a rebuttal.

Apple cites this order violating the 1st and 5th amendment as well as needing substantial resource use. They also state that it is a dangerous precedent to create a GovOS.

Although if Apple does loose this, does that mean we can court order Boeing to start making White Stars? [:D]

Good news for Apple and the rest of us:

http://www.theverge.com/2016/2/29/11135986/new-york-apple-fbi-iphone-encryption-ruling

New York court rejects FBI argument for breaking iPhone lockscreen

Apple just won a major victory in an iPhone warrant case -- although it may not help the company in its San Bernardino trial. The victory comes from a New York district court that's been facing something legally similar to the higher-profile warrant case playing out in San Bernardino. In a 50-page ruling, Magistrate Judge Orenstein found that the All Writs Act did not justify the government's request, and denied the government's request to legally compel Apple's help.

In denying the request, Orenstein finds the government's interpretation of the All Writs Act is so broad as to be unconstitutional SNIP

The ruling doesn't have any direct effect on the San Bernardino case, but it gives Apple a much stronger hand if the California District Court finds in the government's favor. If Apple loses the California case, the presence of an opposing New York ruling will also be very helpful in pushing for an appeal. SNIP

FBI has accessed San Bernardino shooter’s phone without Apple’s help

Rumor is an Israeli company offered a solution that takes an image of the area in the iPhone that stores the encrypted key(s) and reflashes it every n times. As this area is the part 'destroyed' after 10 failed logins, the FBI essentially had an unlimited amount of time to crack the passcode without fear of losing the data permanently.

Greta75 -> RE: “APPLE TO JUDGE: DROP DEAD!” (3/28/2016 11:15:11 PM)

Yea, much Ado about nothing!

So Apple would rather it get hacked by outsiders than hack it themselves. Does this make it safer?

No. The FBI wanted a test case to expand their powers.

Shit, they probably invented the encryption in the first place. They are experts at that. Remember WW2 ?

And that is what should have happened in the first place, just extract the encrypted data to some other medium and use a different OS to try to crack it, even by brute force.

The issue is they wanted the cop on the beat to be able to look at some person's data just like that. No warrant or anything.

I would have said fuck you as well. In fact if the cops come and want the combo to my safe they are going to need an acetylene torch. Fuck you, that is MY safe. Know what safe means ?

Absolutely.

Seat belt laws. They got a big foot in the door with that. And ever since it has been the boiling frog. The excuse that it costs money does not hold water when it comes to rights.

I absolutely agree.

The FBI may be forced to reveal to Apple exactly how they were able to bypass the auto-erase feature of the iPhone 5c.

The obscure “vulnerabilities equities process” was a rule brought in by the Obama administration in 2010 that compels any government agency – be it the NSA, Secret Service or even the FBI – to report flaws or back doors in technology that might put Americans at risk.
...
The idea behind the ruling was to ensure that rogue states or criminal groups don’t also discover holes in software and exploit them before the creator has had time to fix it.

According to the vulnerabilities equities process, there needs to be a White House meeting to discuss the pros and cons of tipping off Apple.

There's no exception. Every single vulnerability acquired by the government must be reviewed this way, a senior Obama administration official told CNNMoney.
...

Delicious irony!

"The FBI may be forced to reveal to Apple exactly how they were able to bypass the auto-erase feature of the iPhone 5c. "

MWAHAHAHAHA

But to the tech minded it is not that much of a mystery. Just don't use the Apple OS. If you can access the raw, encrypted data you can do it with brute force. They might have even had to unsolder a chip from the circuit board.

They DO have access to patent files which would describe the architecture of the device. The only way this could be prevented is to have the NVM built right into the processor, and unless that is implemented just right, might not work either.

I thought these things had SIMs, little memory chips like a thumbdrive but smaller. I rememebr dumping a phone in a toilet and wrecking it and was able to just throw my SIM into a new twenty buck phone and had my number and whatever else. Apparently in those phones the NVRAM is soldered to the board. Otherwise there would have been so little problem even the government would not have went to all this trouble.

But really, reverse engineering is harder than it used to be, but with our money they can do it. They got the patent files, they can get the specification sheets on all the chips used in the device, and they got about the best tools in the world. (not quite the best but damn close)

Bottom line, they were just flexing their muscle.

One of these days, enough people will get pissed off and line them up and...

My understanding of the iPhone 6 and above is that decrypting those devices would require far more than simply unsoldering a chip.

Supposedly the iPhone will wipe the NAND area which holds part of the encryption keys. I'm sure Apple will be changing this architecture in the future to be more secure and less recoverable.

There's a cold boot attack that could potentially reveal encryption keys, but in the iPhone 6 and above case those encryption keys are only part of what is required to decrypt devices, the other parts are in hardware.
