betataster -> How do you pronounce Domme? (3/7/2016 6:44:11 PM)

I would have thought it's pronounced the same as Dom but I heard a video greeting where the Domme pronounced it with two syllables.

It is pronounced "Dom". Although, it's been awhile, some feminist D types prefer Domme "Dom-may".

We don't see too much of that around here anymore, but it used to be a big deal.

And they're usually laughed at until people pass out from lack of oxygen.

If one needs to spell it differently then one should pronounce it differently for the same reason it is spelled differently. It seems elegant and feminine also whereas I would think "dom" is lacking both characteristics.

There is no accent acute on the "e" and so pronouncing the word as if there were, is an affectation. This word would also have to get spelled with an extra "e" at the end (Dommée), which it isn't.

ET and stef are referring to the feeble attempt of a few to further Frenchify this feminized version of the nickname for Dominant, which results in sounding like "dummy" instead. [&o]

Can you imagine female submissives referring to themselves as "sub-bay" (subbée) in order to Frenchify-feminize an affectation for themselves?
HINT: They don't like being called "subbie" as it is. Some male subs don't mind it, though.

The term "Domina" is the female form of "Dominus" in Latin, and therefore means Mistress as an honorific. . . but it is also the title for the head of a nunnery.

You will run across Domina used more often in the context of a Sensual Domina or an Erotic Domina, which may or may not include sensual/sexual sadism.

(It doesn't with me, and I think of myself a Sensuous Domina, since sensuous combines the meaning of both sensual and erotic.)

Personally, I think I'd prefer subster. [;)]
Or maybe submeister - no, that wouldn't work, for obvious reasons.

Sensuous Domina. I like that, a lot.

I also like Domina in general better than Domme. I have been using Domme in my written communications to refer to unnamed dominant women in the third person. As in "this Domme reached out to me through my profile and we have been conversing back and forth." I think I will change that to "this Domina reached out to me..."

Another advantage to using Domina over Domme is that the voice dictation app on my phone has no idea what to do with "Domme". It usually comes out as "dumb", though I have seen "them" and "Tom", also. [8|]

Both abbreviations of Dominant (meaning Dom and Domme) are pronounced the same. You'll find some silly folks that pronounce it "Dom-AY," but they tend to be those without much practical experience mingling with others.

Whenever I say it, I do so using 11 syllables.

It's a bit complicated, takes some effort but, as long as it ends with an ellipsis, you're getting close.

MissDark09 -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme? (3/28/2016 1:46:41 PM)

Wow, seems a bit judgmental really. For quite a long time, I just thought it was pronounced with two syllables, but then again why does it matter so much? I've heard so many titles people give themselves. In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter what someone wants to be called or how they pronounce it? Language is ever evolving and I think it's kind of interesting that it does.

LMAO, happened to me at a munch:) being english, my accent gets attention, specially when Im speaking on a mic to about thirty people.....
Went up to the bar after my lil intro and a guy comes up to me and says
Dom eh?
I almost rolled my eyes so far back in my head I could see my ass. Then realised every third word ended with eh?
I have to admit, I say it far more than I should, family in the uk tell me I say it a lot.

WickedsDesire -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme? (3/31/2016 7:19:06 AM)

ExiledTyrant It is pronounced "Dom". is correct.

LadyGrave -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme? (4/5/2016 2:26:28 PM)

If it was Dommé, you would pronounce it "Dom-may". Domme is a portmanteau of Dom and the French word for woman, femme, and femme is pronounced "fem" not "fem-may". I study French, and it annoys the fuck out of me when I hear it pronounced Dom-may without there being an accent.
