I will be visiting San Francisco in about a month and am looking to buy a couple of bottles of a rum that I knew and enjoyed when I was in The Brit Merchant Marine; Hudson Bay Rum..................................I have looked through google without success. Can anybody give me a pointer to any liquor store anywhere in S.F. or the surrounds that sells this mighty brew ?

The title of this thread is an old seaman's joke about going to sea for the first time, when all seamen were promise 'wine, women and song' and what they actually received was ..............!!!

Thanks DizzyChick.................that tells me all about the rum itself but not where I can actually buy it in the S.F. area. Ah well, if I can't find it, there is always Myers ( which is not available in this country either *smile*).

It doesn't look like it's made anymore. Seagram's bought the HBC company in 1987 and it looks like you can only find it at estate sales or auctions if you're lucky enough to find it.

Damn !!!! Thanks for that................I was on a ship taking a few thousand cases of that stuff from U.K. to the west coast of the States. We made great inroads into it on the crossing and made a lot of friends in the U.S. and Canada when we got into port too. The breakage manifest must have looked phenomenal !!!

After doing some searching online it looks like bottles of the stuff have sold for about $200 or more. My favorite rum to date is Appleton Estate. Now when I try to drink any other kind of rum, they just taste disgusting to me and I love rum! I would have loved to have tried the Hudson Bay rum. Seems it was quite popular.

So contact the distiller and ask them. I am sure they will be delighted to learn that you like their product so much it's on your must-do list for your visit to the US.

Edit: Never mind. I should have read the rest of the thread before replying.

Bummer, that you cannot get a hold of your favorite rum. Have you tried Dominican rum before? We have had to go down to D.C. to get some a few years ago, when we could not find any in the suburbs, at a fairly reasonable cost.

It might be for sentimental reasons from when we vacationed down in Santa Domingo and then stayed at a beach resort further north, but we developed a fondness for rum from the D.R.
