Sad but true!!!

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.
Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he
was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to
come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life
isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial
policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies
(adults, not kids, are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when
well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a
six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate;
teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a
teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the
parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments
became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better
treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost
after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she
spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge financial settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his
wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He
is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If
you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do
nothing.

Much of this can be disputed in the present. http://www.citizen.org/print_article.cfm?ID=785 ( the almost final hot coffee story )
Much of it has always been the case. Common sense has never been all that common.
Simple minds believe the way to solve problems in a hugely complex society, is to roll back the clock and do away with the rules that they don't like. That's fine, if you just move out of the society and live in a cave.

There are about 350 million folks in the US. Think a few simple rules will sort everything out for all of them? And what if one of those simple rules still rubs you the wrong way?

Platitudes like this mean nothing. ( I don't know if platitude is the right word for my meaning )

The problems of the world are so so simple and its solutions so so complex. Still we insist on seeing complex problems and simple solutions.

All problems can be solved if we have enough weapons and prisons or if people wouldn't be so bloody minded and just thought like ourselves.

Kedikat, I read that page, and nowhere did I read anything that in anyway made the whole case anything but a travisty....I was about 5 or 6 when I learned that hot coffee will hurt you, how the hell did a woman make it to 79 without learning it?

It was more to show that the common 2.6 million dollar settlement always quoted isn't correct. And that at various points in the trial both sides pretty much admitted fault in some points. The final settlement being secret, but less than the one always touted.
I have spilled coffee on myself. It burned, but not too badly. Accidents happen. And though this is an extreme case, it is odd that a company would continually put themselves in a position to be sued like that. Both sides seemed very stubborn and foolish all a long.
