ORIGINAL: Greta75 I am curious about what Libs think the Navy should do about this. In my country, Muslims are currently crying discrimination that they cannot work in the Navy Vessels, because the Navy refuses to have two separate kitchens. One Halal and one Non-halal on board their vessels, so they cannot eat the food prepared from the non-halal kitchen thus they are prevented from being able to work in that job. Our Minister told them that, the food will be pork free, but the ships are not big enough for the luxury of two separate kitchens! It is difficult to have a halal kitchen in confined spaces such as those aboard Navy vessels. Where we can, we will accommodate. And I’m certain that there are situations where I cannot please or accommodate all requirements. I cannot hand-on-heart assure you all my mobile kitchens are halal. Provisions are available for Muslims on board ships with food options such as seafood, chicken and vegetables. Apart from Islam, religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism and Sikhism also practise certain dietary restrictions. However, we do not insist that public eating places cater to any specific religious requirement rather than encouraging any one religious group to push fully its own strict requirements. These facilitates social integration where Singaporeans come together, eat in the same space and interact. This is the cornerstone of a multiracial society and Singaporeans accept this. The preparation of halal foods require strict adherence to the religious stipulations governing the food stalls, preparation and even storage. So for Navy ships, space is always a premium - which needs to be maximised and prioritised - for key operational requirements in terms of combat systems and equipment spares I am personally happy with the Minister's answer. He could have gone PC and said something stupid, like, let's make all Navy vessels halal kitchens since ALL other religious group can eat Halal food anyway! Glad he stood up for this one! But it's exactly this sort of stupid shit that irritates the fuck out of me. NO other religious group demands such things! Not even Jews who don't take pork as well. And guess what? Sikh, Hindus and Buddhists do not eat beef. No special requests for special kitchen from them at all! I am curious why you constantly start spurious threads. the question wasnt asked by Muslims, as stated in your post, but by one opposition MP.
