ORIGINAL: OsideGirl I think part of the issue for me is that the character never really connects with the audience and you really get a sense of disgust from her towards other characters...but not towards the act itself. The act itself comes across as "I'm okay with almost anything, but I don't enjoy it" (Except for the guy she picks up in the bar) It's like having sex is the same clipping her toe nails. It's never really clear why she so throws herself into being an escort. According to the mother (and to some degree the sister) she's selfish and enjoys being the center of attention. Also, it's easy, big money -- about maybe 10K a week. I suppose we can conclude its the excitement, autonomy and money that drives her. The real cost of the work isn't so much dealing with the men and performing sex acts as it is being cut off from regular society. She loses her family, job, and doesn't have any friends. Making her own decision and being her own boss, though, are more important to her. The only people who don't seem to let her down are the clients who know the boundaries. They are the ones who most accept her for who she is and deliver what she wants; everyone else rubs her the wrong way -- by wanting what she can't offer or by making personal judgments about way of life. Everything was so un-glamorously - glamorous. In the end, although disgraced, she was more honest and moral than the establishment types in the law firm who pretended to be ethical and moral while being uniformly selfish. One also felt she was a better person than her wine-guzzling mother who offered no support, understanding, or counsel. Life is never easy for the non-conformist. Part of this is society and its mores, and part of it is the questionable judgment that goes into defying norms meant to protect people from bad behaviors and choices.
