Before my first visit to Hawai‘i, I used to think of the Islands of Aloha as pineapples, hula and beaches. But after visiting and then moving here and living here for many years, I have a much different impression of what this place means. I came across a wonderful article from Huffington Post that talks about the spirit of these islands and those who call them home. It really does reinforce the saying of "lucky we live Hawai‘i", because living in Hawai‘i is more than being in a beautiful place. It is definitely that, but it is a way of life too. I found the islands to be full energy and diversity. It really does seem to be alive.

Most definitely Osidegirl! There is a different energy here. I felt it from the moment I first got off the plane on my first visit. As cheesy as it sounds, it felt magical. That doesn't mean it's always a wonderful atmosphere every single day (I can't help think of a local insurance company whose tag line is, "in paradise, bad still happens".) And there are bugs! BIG bugs! But the pluses outweigh the minuses, all depending on what your minuses are. ;)

Two places I sailed into when I was in the merchant marine that had that weird feel. One was Hawaii. The other was going up the river to Rangoon ( as it was then). Both times it was dawn, cool, and the colours in the sky were incredible. The whole crew were on the deck both times and not a word was spoken. It just seemed like a deep sigh was going through the ship.

I miss Hawaii as I lived there off & on about 8 1/2 years, and even went to high school there back in the 90s. I first lived there when my Canadian foster parents moved from Baton Rouge Louisiana to Oahu. At first I hated it because I felt trapped, and then I hated being called a haole, or perhaps it was the "stupid haole" I hated being called lol. Then I grew to love it the longer I lived there, and I loved going to the beach's especial Makapu'u back then, and Sandy beach. Some of my best memories are of Hawaii, and the Japanese ladies I dated there. I often times wonder why the .... I left. Now I can not afford to move back, or even afford a cheap apartment there sadly. I wouldn't mind to get back & apply for housing though being I am on SSI. People are different in Hawaii, and once they get to kow you can be some of the best & nicest people you may ever meet. I also like that there is not a lot of racism there, other then the Haole bit but you get over that in time. Hell I use it as a gamer tag now in a lot of the game I play. HaoleBoy, which is one of my level 100's on World of Warcraft. Yes I do miss Hawaii greatly, and its one of the most beautiful places I have lived. I would not mind living in Saipan, and checking it out at least once in a my life as they say its as beautiful as Hawaii but cheaper to live in, and my SSI is good there too.
