WhoreMods -> Does anybody else find the general tone of Skin Two snottily unpleasant? (5/6/2016 12:06:56 PM)

The whole magazine seems to be written out of naked contempt. Initially I assumed that this aimed at the evil vanilla scum*, but I increasingly get impression that their beef isn't just with tabloid editors who write about fetishists the same way Skin Two's staff writers and freelance hacks write about everybody they haven't claimed as part of their clique, but with any perv who isn't part of the acceptable London fetish-y clade that they alone are able to speak for.
Seriously, there's been a horrible snottiness to the thing for a long time now. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

*(Irony: I don't work for Skin Two myself)

I haven't seen it in years, so I can't respond directly to your comment. Thinking all the way back to pre-internet days, Skin Two was the best source of all things fetish: validation of fetishists, worldwide list of resources, reporting, interviews and, of course, beautiful images. If it has devolved into snark, that is a shame.

It had pretty much lost that monopoly before the rise of the internet though, hadn't it? Marquis started in (I think) '95, and <<O>> had been around for a few years before that. Not sure when Secret started, but that would have been around much the same time as well.

S2 was good, but the internet pretty much killed its exclusivity, regarding its images. everyone was sharing them
They had a great line of latex clothing....I have some old copies of mags from the 90s lying around somewhere.
But dealing with them business to business was a pain in the arse. In fact I stopped selling their latex in 2004 I think.

I remember a lot of complaints in there about their artwork being plundered for techno flyers back in the '90s myself. Which raises the disturbing thought that maybe some of the (as you and lthrpup have both said, excellent) imagery in the magazines was produced as work for hire and Westwood retained the copyright to it, rather than the photographers or artists who actually produced it.

I didn't know that they were bad to deal with on a business level, though.

There are very few Brits using this site, WM, and, for those, I suspect only a tiny number of them will have even seen a copy of S2. Myself, the last copy I ever saw was literally decades ago. I suspect, with the advent of the Interwebznets, it's gone all upmarket, niche and stuff. Standard trajectory of certain print-only publications in this day and age. People will buy the mag at least in part because of how nice 'n' luxury all those heavily plasticised and glossy the pages feel.

S2, basically, doesn't matter to most people - even most kinksters - any more. Snobbery is probably the major reason that it's still going now. My bet is that it'll simply fold, soon.
