I just read today that the Oxford English Dictionary have added Singaporean English words into it! Wow! That's amazing! Love it!

Some words added are:

blur - slow in understanding (Why are you so blur?)
lepaking - slacking around or chilling and relaxing doing nothing (I am just lepaking today)
sabo - to intentionally caused inconvenience, trouble or harm to others to gain a personal advantage (Why you sabo me for?)
shiok - feelings of pure pleasure (Sex feels damn shiok!) Oxford describe this as the equivalent of "cool!" and "great!", but I think they got the meaning of that word wrong in their dictionary!
sotong - used to denote a stereotypically slow in understanding person. (Why are you blur like sotong?)
wah - Used to express admiration. (Wah! Your car looks amazing!)

We have like anti-Singlish camp who believes that we shouldn't bastardise the use of English, but I am on the pro-Singlish camp. I think every country got their own added invented words into the English language, and we should have them too!

But really really genuinely surprise any dictionary would want to recognise our words.

A bit like Americans pronounce 'semi' as sem-eye where we say semee.

we go both ways on that, it depends on who's saying it, and what follows it.

your first usage is consistent with tractor trailers.

semi-circle is an example where people will use it both ways.

Another instance crept into my head.

Dodge used to make a 426cid engine. It was called a "Hemi" (hemmee). That's how I learned to pronounce the engine.

They also made a 413cid engine that was a similar design, but not quite the same. Colloquially, it became known as the "Semi-Hemi". I used to correct people when they called it a "semmeye hemmee".

US versus British pronunciations. In the US, trough rhymes with cow.

British speakers including Canada and Australia will have the gh produce a F sound.

So no, you're not pronouncing it wrong since you are an American.

Reminds me: 'route' is pronounced 'rowt' in the USA but 'root' in the UK. But I've noticed the UK pronunciation must sound so wrong to American ears that British actors playing British parts in American films always say 'rowt'. Even Captain Picard used to say 'rowt' in Star Trek - there's no way poor Patrick Stewart would have said it that way in real life.

No, we don't.

another word that Patrick Stewart might have had to re-learn is the word ' data' .................pronounced 'dartar' in UK and Aussie but it is 'Daytah' in the U.S.

I remember the ep in which a woman, cynical of Commander Data's 'personhood' as a 'mere android', addressed him as Dartar. Data corrected her. She was surprised - why would he care, since he was only an android, etc? He replied, 'Because Data is my name'.

Ah - see, now you mention it, of course - nobody refers to 'Rowt 66'.

But, don't Americans usually say 'rowt', then? If it's both, when do they say 'rowt' and when do they say 'root'?

My son's name is Dov.......................you don't get much simpler than that but you would be amazed at how many people want to call him Dove ( Duv) ............He actually had a stand-up argument with a casual teacher in primary school and insisted "Because that's my name !!"

What sort of name is 'Dov'? I can honestly say I've never heard of that name before.

ETA - And good for Dvr Jr for sticking up for himself in that way. Quite right too. The lad has true grit!

Perhaps it is a regional thing: it has always been 'root' to me.
