Bernie's Glow Sticks
A meme offering instructions on how to make "Bernie Sanders glow sticks" actually provides a recipe for a chlorine bomb.
CLAIM: A meme offers instructions for creating harmless homemade glow sticks.

FALSE AND DANGEROUS
EXAMPLE: [Collected via e-mail, May 2016]

Apparently a meme is getting passed around that tells Bernie Sanders supporters how to make a glow stick but is actually a chlorine bomb. Is this true

ORIGIN:A meme directed at Bernie Sanders supporters, purportedly offering them instructions on how to create homemade glow sticks, started circulating on social media in May 2016:

The instructions given in the above-displayed meme don't create glow sticks, however, but rather explosions. Mixing chlorine and isopropyl alcohol creates a violent chemical reaction, which (when it is confined to a sealed container) has dramatic, potentially dangerous results. A video posted by the Backyard Scientist in 2013 demonstrates this chemical reaction:

The exact origins of the above-displayed meme are unclear, but one of the first mentions we were able to uncover was posted to the /pol/ section of the web site 4chan in March 2016. The meme was shared again in May 2016,(https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/73247948/#q73249715) along with a message encouraging forum members to spread it on social media in an apparent attempt to prank Bernie Sanders supporters:

Hey guys! Let's trend this on Twitter and my FaveBook. Even though I like Hillary the mostest I still think this is a fun idea for a truce between the Democrat groups! Who's with me!?

While some forum members found this "joke" funny, others reported the meme to the FBI:

Spreading instructions on public forums and social media sites to get people hurt is terrorism and will get you years in prison.

ATTENTION: Somebody is literally trying to kill Bernie Sanders supporters.

The following infographic has recently surfaced on Tumblr, Reddit, and DeviantArt labeled “How to Make Bernie Sander’s (sic) Glowsticks!”

kv9k0rbe5bxc6v2qbnjanp93l0x0z6ji4jkgfxasa0fc5mwvsehqaafvoh1gsrso

Please note that this recipe will NOT make a glowstick. Following these instructions will make a potentially lethal chlorine bomb, according to Jack Smith IV of tech.mic.

The resulting chemical reaction would create a “pressurized explosion in the bottle,” dispersing chlorine gas into the air, which can fill the lungs with enough fluid to asphyxiate potential victims.

This meme is for a 2-liter bomb. This clip shows what a 3-liter chlorine bomb is capable of:

Some of the subreddits were labelled “Let’s trick Sanders supporters into killing themselves” on forums such as /r/KillThoseWhoDisagree and /r/EnoughSandersSpam.

The response has been mostly negative, with one notably horrified user responding with “I think this is one of the most f***ed up things I’ve ever seen on the internet. And yes, I’ve seen a lot.”

However, it is currently unknown how many times the meme has been shared on social media groups with less internet-savvy client bases, such as Facebook or Twitter.

As of this writing, it is unknown who created this dangerous graphic.

So do you figure Trump supporters did this or the establishment. Actually he is more dangerous to the establishment than to Trump, and he is not too fond of Israel. Republicans are.

Actually, I wonder how many people would believe this and do it. Seriously, this is telling of the lack of science education in this country.

People in this country are so fucking stooopid it is ridiculous. i mean if you work a press at work, when you hit the pedal they actually have handcuffs that pull your hands back out of the way now. I shit you not. People don't even know that ten tons of force will crush their hands.

But then, will they ever find the asshole who did this ? Might be kinda hard. Need more laws and closer surveillance. Forget about educating people, that is not an option. Shit, if they got smart and started to really think about things politicians would be out of business.

So we have to protect people from their own stupidity.

Thanks Lucy. This explains that picture I saw on FB with the guys face looking beat up and a warning about glow sticks. I thought that perhaps people were being bludgeoned with painted night sticks.

This just goes to show that not everything on the internet is true.

That could be over the great American tradition of litigation, rather than stupidity: I once worked at a manufacturing plant where some tit put a drill through his hand and then tried to sue the management for damages.

Probably put out by the CIA on behalf of the real establishment....bankers and industrialists. Bernie wants to fuck with the bankers and you don't ever...fuck with the bankers.

The only mitigating factor would be that the Super delegates will play ball so they and the rest will nominate HRC and she's right in their pocket. HRC just like her husband is a wolf in sheep's clothing and will have Wall street et al, remain as they are, gambling, making billion$ and all...at the risk of the taxpayers.

If you think Sarbanes/Oxley and its Public Company Accounting Oversight Board or Dodd/Frank fixed all of that...think again.

This is when you watch Fox News and see how quickly they further disparage Trump and actually make HRC...'news.' Why ? See above.

They are not "handcuffs." They are safety devices called "pull-backs" and when I worked at a metal stamping factory, every employee was taught why they were necessary and how to use them.
However, some employees figured that they could make more money (almost all were on piecework) by disengaging from the devices after the supervisor had made sure they were correctly attached to the employee at the start of every shift.
I think most employees were aware of the danger involved in removing the straps, but chose to do so to make a little more money. Unfortunately, some paid a higher price by losing parts of their fingers.

And now we'll hear the usual responses about how that kind of thinking is proof that we are evolving into a "nanny state."
