My dom is going to try to quit smoking after over 30 years and wants to try Zyban.

Has anyone used it? Can you tell us about side-effects, what we might expect, and whether it worked for you?

Also is it dangerous to go on it without seeing a doctor? He isn't covered by health insurance and I got the prescription by asking my own doctor for Wellbutrin--which is the same drug (saying it was for depression). Because I get meds for free and we can't afford it the other way.

Thanks for any insights!

All prescribed meds should be done for the individual obtaining the drug.  There are contra indications for use of any drug and possible side effects.  My suggestion would be to do a google search and read through the volumes of information.

As for personal experience,  i am on an anti-depressant and wanted to quit smoking so convinced the Doc to change my med to try the wellbrutin,  yes it eliminated my nicotine cravings however it caused me to have such severe agitation and sudden rages i switched back within days.  If i had stayed on the med i know i would have killed someone, talk about road rage, multipy it 100 fold.  This does not happen to all, however as i said there are a variety of side effects, and you should be followed by a MD when starting any drug.  Depending on your MD perhaps you could talk to him/her and ask about the possiblity of your Dom trying it to quit smoking, even if you are not completly upfront he/she will be able to read between the lines possibly and give you some information.

The short answer is do you research and be very careful.

My girlfriends mother was diagnosed with emphysema and the doc put her on Zyban to help her quit. She said it made her feel like a zombie and she kept nodding out. It ended up that she nodded out with a cigarette in her hand and burnt the house down. She did end up finally quitting...by using the nicotine patches.

Wow now there are two completly different reactions to the med.  That is exactly what I meant when i said to research it and be careful when you are thinking of taking Rx med while not under any MD's care.

I did use it and quit for four days. It did not work for me, but there are others that have success. I quit cold turkey and that was 18 months ago.

Edited to say.. Good luck to you!

Wellbutrin and Zyban are not the same.  I have taken both.  I do not understand it, as they both are made up of the same compounds, but Wellbutrin does not work like Zyban does.  I quit for five years taking Zyban.  It was tough, but I did it.  The only thing is that you can not take it if you are bi-polar and in some people it will drive them manic.  Other than that I would say it is rather effective.

Buproprion is zyban (for smoking) and wellbutrin (anti-depressant).  As far as I know it is the same drug.  Please link me to where it says they are two different drugs.  That is news to me.

Take them, and see which one helps you quit smoking and which one does not.  I have taken both for the same purpose.  Zyban works, Wellbutrin does not.  So you tell Me?  I have no idea what the difference is, although I know that there are two forms of Wellbutrin.  We have both sitting in the bathroom.

As far as I always knew, they were marketted as the same drug, but for some reason Wellbutrin did absolutely nothing for Me.  Maybe it was just coincidence.

I can understand your doms desperation, but it's like playing with fire to take drugs that weren't directly perscribed you.  Your doctor has to take  your medical history into account before perscribing meds.  Please advise your Dom against going this route.  There's a great website call Quitnet.com that offers great support for people trying to quit smoking, seems to have help thousands of former smokers.  quitnet.com

Here are some links to sites of side affects and what some users of, Zyban, say their experiences were with the use of the drug:...........  Hope they are of some use to you both.........        Rosa

I'm curious about something, perhaps someone here will know the answer.  Are the dosages the same regardless of whether you take zyban for depression or smoking cessation?  You may want to check that out if you are actually considering taking the drug for smoking cessation but your doc thinks it's for depression.

And it may not make a difference to you, but you now have a medical history of being treated for depression.  That can impact your ability to get long-term disability insurance in the future, or impact the type of coverage you qualify for.

The dosages would most likely be different, if being treated for different reasons.  From what I've Learned in my readings, even when treating one or the other within one disease, dosages vary and there are different classes of Wellbutrin within the same drug family.

My father tried to do Zyban. He's normally a very passive, pleaseable man, but it was like He was taking steroids. Things were thrown/broken, etc and there was a degree of physical violence against family members. I'd say cold turkey works best- just a little irritability ( ok a lot of irritability)- but things like beef jerky, celery sticks, carrots, anything that is small enough to fit in the hand and chew on at momentary intervals is good ( just try not to do the beef jerky too much...adds pounds like craaazy!)

The dosage for Zyban is 150mg, twice a day.  That is the max you can take of either drug before it induces seizures.  The dosage for Wellbutrin starts at 75mg (half a tablet) and goes up to 300mg a day, depending on the severity of the depression.

There are actually 3 different formulations of Wellbutrin;  Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR and Wellbutrin XL.  The difference between the Wellbutrin versions are delay agents that regulate the release of bupropion into your system. Wellbutrin SR shares the same delay agent as Zyban and is identical in chemical composition.  Wellbutrin XL releases bupropion at an even slower rate than Wellbutrin SR and the regular Wellbutrin has no delay agents and the active ingredient is released almost immediately into your system once it hits the stomach.

I'm not all to familiar with Zyban. However, if you can't go Cold Turkey, horse hair is a great. With a needle, run a thread or two of horse hair in each ciggarett. This will cause you to take fewer drags.

Prescription drug wise, Wellbutrin continues to be a common and fairly safe method.

Whatever, Miss Pharmacist.  Incidentally I checked.  I do have three different types on the counter, and not one of them worked.  However, you have successfully proved your prowess.  Of course it does not matter a damn, but if it makes you feel better, kudos to you.

Yes and i went insane, not like the kids are driving me crazy, i mean like yelling at my best friend  trying to kill myself kinda crazy. Zyban is also Welbutran which is an antidepressiant, which i suppose is good if your going to get depressed about not smoking anymore. but a very very bad thing if you are on any other meds or not aware that your taking a antidepressiant, which have to be very closely regulated when you first start taking them. the worse part was i couldnt even acknowledge that i was acting differently.

Forgive me for going to the trouble of sharing that knowledge with you.  You know, with an attitude like the one you're displaying here, it's hardly surprising that your wife has had enough of you.  You must be a real peach to be around at home.

If I needed you to share it, I would have asked for it.  Ever hear of winning a battle just to lose the war?

Now, seeing as how you are a psychologist as well as a pharmacist, knowing what I know about what is going on around here you could not be any further from the truth.  It would probably be better if you went back to school and brushed up on your skills, and if I need to see a doctor I will go talk to My own.  At least he seems to have a clue.
