Long Weekend

Dear Ones ---

I’m too tired to attempt polished prose—he types as sighs of relief ascend across America—but I did want to give folks a heads-up about my next medical adventure.

As you know, some sort of mystery node has been growing in my left lung for at least a year now. It’s still smaller than a pea, but the docs want to know what it is, as do I. It’s my equivalent of “Who shot J.R.?”

So I finally got around to scheduling a biopsy. (I don’t rush into these things.) It will take place at Georgetown on Thursday morning.

The procedure will be a bit of a production. Guided by a CT scanner, an interventional radiologist will guide a needle gingerly into my lung, hoping to pinpoint the node without damaging the surrounding tissue. Normally, I gather, something like this would be done with a local anesthetic and sedatives. But mine is never the normal route.

The sedatives pose a risk of making my breathing more difficult, and the last thing anyone wants is a respiratory distress in the middle of everything else. So I’ll be given a general anesthetic and intubated so that a machine breathes for me. I’ve been emphatic about my desire to have the breathing tube removed before I’m awakened, so fingers crossed on that front.

Given the complexities of the procedure, Mother Georgetown will keep me overnight and—God and the docs willing, not necessarily in that order—discharge me on Friday. She tends to have separation anxiety where yours truly is concerned, but perhaps she’s worked through it. Memorial Day will give me an extra bit of breathing room before returning to work on Tuesday.

My oncologist is not terribly worried about the node, so I’m not either. I can always panic later if need be! Meantime, please keep this professional patient in your thoughts and prayers on Thursday. Thank you so much.

All the best to one and all!

Cheers,
DC

As always, thinking of you.
And yes, before anesthesia I always make it clear that tubes should be removed before waking up. Feeling them being pulled out feels awful. Not pain exactly, but just icky.

What gets to me is waking up and having to wait an hour or so till my breathing is reliable enough for the docs to feel comfortable removing the tube. Few things set off my gag reflex like a tube down my throat!

Have you ate any peas recently?
If the procedure is so complex why would they release you the next day...they released me into the wild a long time ago and I went postively feral

Why do you require breathing tubes and being knocked out with a general anesthetic (danger lies there) for a biopsy. Unconfuse me. Local anesthetic and needle in ye chest.

I wish thee well but truly I am confused.

Thanks, everyone!

The story took an interesting turn. Talking with the radiology folks (clerks, not docs) yesterday, I was struck by their saying I'd be sedated rather then anesthetized. After all, the doctor had clearly explained that the sedation drugs wouldn't be a good choice for me and I would need a general anesthetic. I had a sense that I should pursue the question more vigorously, but I was swamped and stressed at work, so I figured we'd sort it out this morning.

Well . . .

In the cab to the hospital, I heard from the doctor--amid myriad apologies--that the biopsy needs to be rescheduled. Apparently there'd been a ball drop between interventional radiology (which had me on the schedule) and anesthesiology (which didn't). The latter's roster was too crowded to squeeze me in. So the doc is herding the cats to set up a new date and time. I'll follow up with them tomorrow.

To be honest, I wasn't all that perturbed by the delay. I've lived through much worse, and a restful day at home was a godsend. Tomorrow, I'll head back to work, where deadlines loom.

Again, thanks so much. You guys are great!

It's good that they didn't want to rush you into the procedure. Make sure to let us known when the next scheduled biopsy so we can double the good luck wishes. :P
