Good, because they're coming from a world where women making decisions about their own sexuality is unknown. They need this.

Many years ago, my father's South American business friends would send their sons here to go to college. Somehow I got the job of explaining this to them. That morality here is different than at home. That women agreeing to go out to dinner with you would not bring a chaperon, and the fact that they weren't did not mean they were whores.

That if they had sex once with a woman, it didn't mean she was obligated to do it again.

That if they spent the night with the guy down the hall, didn't mean they would do it with just anyone.

I'm not sure they ever agreed that women should have sexual autonomy, but none of them went to jail and that was good enough. I was focused on actions, not thoughts.

You might have bothered to click on the relevant webpage, it's actually vastly different from what you or the Washington Post think it is... It's a general health website, but I guess that isn't quite sensationalist enough. Oh bummer, I feel so old, journalists once did research and papers employed fact checkers...

I will give my vote to the Germans. I can attest they are excellent teachers :)

Very good remark.

In fact, it may be what the Washington Post thinks it is, but is is not what the Washington Post wants you to think it is.

for those who might want to look themselves (before or without the WP detour)

http://www.zanzu.de/de

if you take a look at the language ("Sprache") options you might notice that by offering german, english, french, dutch, russian, turkish, arabic ... it is not for refugees only

I liked the idea even as the Washington Post described it.

I would like the idea of some future webpage describing and teaching "journalists" some basic skills:

research ...

facts checking ...

(multi-lingual of course)

I shared a house with two German blokes once. Everything they told about the way Germans 'do sex' made me think, 'Yup, they've got this right'.

Germans don't generally do humour well - not to mention World Wars - but I've always suspected that they might well have sex 'taped'.

I could imagine plenty of refugees would read the German health authorities' advice and be utterly astonished. Women, for instance, thinking, 'Eh? We get to say 'No' - and we even get to *enjoy* it?' I have admittedly little idea of what the average Syrian refugee might think about the whole subject of sex and relationships and how it might differ from my own but, put it this way, even many Brits I've known have been agreeably surprised.

That was what internships or studying journalism was for, the more print is disappearing, the worse it gets

Part of the reason that less information is given about an issue is because everything now is all about 'click bait.'

The headlines were just as, if not more, salacious back in the good old days, but they at least had to explain something of consequence in the article.

I saw the headline "Supreme court deadlocked" and had to read through six different articles that commented only on the issue of there being an equal amount of Democrat and Republican appointees, after justice Scalia died. And what the president and congress were supposed to do about it.

The seventh article I came upon in the search actually found their way to explaining the case itself.

This is after the one I found, but close enough:

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/273895-supreme-court-issues-first-4-4-tie-since-scalias-death

It's always been this way, for the most part, but having a headline to get people "riled!" has always sold the papers, which sells advertising.

It's not so much that they are incapable of fact checking, it's just that it's not as necessary to the same ultimate purpose that's been there all along. Knowing that there's an army of people swarming the internet looking for a reason to get "PISSED OFF!," their job is a lot easier nowadays.

Now, the real job is to connect what people read in the media to what they buy from Amazon or whatever store, in the US. Thank you Google. And 'smart phones,' and ...

A hundred years ago papers were sold by newsboys on the corner. It was not unknown for them to shout "war declared" on slow sales days. They would sell out quickly and the only reference to war was a one paragraph item buried in the middle of the paper about Bolivia or some other country none of the buyers cared about.

This isn't new, folks and you're being naive to think otherwise. The purpose of the paper from the paper's pov, is to make money selling papers. Daily News or Fox News, there's no difference.
