maysubgirl,

krys is quite right here.  BDSM is comprised of BD (bondage and discipline), DS (dominance and submission (which master/slave is an extended part of that)) and SM which is sadomasochism.

In very simple terms, bondage uses restraints, possibly in and of itself, DS has to do with the nature of two or more people's relationship to one another (the power exchange), and SM has to do with, again in simple terms, pain play of some sort.

Personally when I started I learned and embraced all 3 of these areas, but you will find people here who are 'into' one, two or all 3.  They are distinct, so just because we are 'kinky' doesn't necessary mean we are automatically compatible with one another.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Actually a lot of people do NOT include dominance/submission with bdsm.  And I'm not sure where you got "master/slave" from.

As usual, terms are not universal in their application.

LA, not everything is left up to individual interpretation - somethings are universal.

True- but they are exceedingly rare compared to the ones that are not.

Bdsm is certainly not one of those universal things.

On the message boards- you have to be kidding -  I've seen more individual interpretations of words than I could have imagined.
Anyway this is what I found:
Wikipedia encyclopediaBondage & Discipline (B&D)Domination & Submission (D&S)Sadism & Masochism (S&M)

I would imagine there are a lot of people who don't include S/m in BDSM, too.  <shrugs>  I rather like that the term includes:  B/D, D/s (which would also include M/s) and S/m; people can pick and choose from there what they enjoy.

If we are using BDSM within the D/s or S&M context, then yes, it's universal within this particular lifestyle. BDSM stands for Bondage Domination Sado Masochism - it's not left up for interpretation - just as S&M is Sado Masochism - you can ask anyone who speaks the english language what S&M stands for and the odds are they will say Sado Masochism - so, it's not a matter of opinion in this case.

"Odds are" means that even though a majority of users will _probably_ say Sado-masochism, there will be a minority of users who do not. The truth of the matter is that I (and a sizeable number of other BDSM practioneers) use S&M to mean "Stand & Model" - which is what you find people doing in a large number of "fetish" clubs.

SM on the other hand, means Sado-Masochism. Or as long time educator, author and sexual maverick Patrick Califia likes to call it, Sexual Magic, which you find far fewer people actually doing, but lots of people dressing up to pretend they do it.

Anyway, back to the OP topic... Depending on where you came into the Scene and when, BDSM (I've also seen it rendered BDsM) can mean either:

Bondage & Discipline/ Sado-Masochism
OR
Bondage & Discipline/ Dominance/submission/ Sado-Masochism

I have seen the former used by people who have been around the Leather world a lot longer than I have, the latter definition I see used more by people who got their introduction to the lifestyle through the internet.  I personally prefer the latter defininition because it's more inclusive, but I have no issues with the folks who use the first definition.

East Coast, West Coast, MidWest, Southeast, Southwest, (let's not even consider learning this in Europe or Asia or elsewhere), during the 70's, 80's, 90's, the aught's... If you came in through the gay or lesbian leather scene, through het or pan groups, you will find different lingo, traditions, habits, dress codes, protocols.  There is not currently, and never has been, anything "universal" about this lifestyle except perhaps the perception that we are somewhat outside the mainstream of society in our relationship and sexual practices.

The inception of the internet, with it's global reach, is finally allowing us the ability to actually communicate almost instantly, realtime, anywhere and everywhere.  This gives us the ability to actually establish "universal" definitions and standards.

The difficulty will be in coming to any agreement on WHICH definitions and standards should be universally adopted.  *grins*  And thus the debates we see raging about...

BDSM is the term for Bondage/Discipline/Sadism/Masochism.
More recently the injection of Domination and submission are being added.
M/s (Master /slave) seems to be an even more recent term that I have been seeing used increasingly - but it is usually injected in the D/s portion.

It is really just an all encompassing word that is evolving just like words do.  It is an acronym, but people are using it more like an actual word these days.  Thats how language progresses.

Discipline, you're right, it's not Dominance -

Bondage/Discipline/Sado/Masochism

and in the BDSM per se almost everything is personal interpretation - even the shorting....couse u can go by bondage diszipline....dominance submission sadism masochism......or if u read certain books it might slightly change.
happy to have a choise how i wanna read the shorting......
unless u wanna have a strikt guideline ( a rulebook or anything like that) to life after-so u dont have to think what is what and what means what for you...but that is kinda not really the idea of beeing dominant uh?

I'm with Geoff.

Plus, "BDSM" as used today isn't really an acronym.  Yes, certain terms can be pointed out as being the initial originating words - but there is so much in "BDSM" today that *isn't* any of the initials.  "BDSM" is far more umbrella term today than it is a collection of first initials making another word.

Agreed.  BDSM is a nice blanket term and slightly easier to type than WIITWD.  Why get persnickety with something everyone can grasp pretty easily?

Because someone asked a persnickety question.

Words, for the most part, work just fine as long as you don't actually try and peg them down and think through them.  When you actually try and do that is when things get messy.
