The final sentence from bounty's own link bears posting:

As a doctor, McHugh does no favors by refusing to relinquish an unscientific and outdated outlook on gender.
Well given he's a doctor and backs up his assertions with some actual science, I'd love to know what the "scientific" outlook on gender is - because all I see is a bunch of hysterical nonsense from the progressive camp.

The intersexed have a clear genetic abnormality which can be traced to biological roots. Some transgender folks have significant chromosomal abnormalities which can lead to biological markers for both genders and that also is a tough case to deal with.

People who have no chromosomal abnormalities but which "think" they were born in the wrong body? That's a mental issue and it's entirely appropriate for doctors to question the idea of engaging in life-altering mutilation of patients in order to conform their body to a mental image they have. It's even more appropriate when you consider Maxwell Maltz's "Psycho-cybernetics" in which he documents the failure of plastic surgery to satisfy patients because it did nothing to alter their mental self-image.

I strongly believe that the progressive wailing around transgender folk is actually killing them. These people commit suicide at rates 20 times that of the nominal population irrespective of whether they successfully transition. And presuming this is because of "persecution" ignores the very real possibility that you're dealing with mental illness and that cutting and pasting bits of yourself is more akin to indulging that illness rather than treating it.

Not every anti-progressive position is based upon bigotry. Your addiction to identity politics deprives you of the capability to think clearly.

Oh dear.

Still, it could be worse.

At least, I was spared an addiction to pontificating. [:)]

It was the "these people" comment that made me guffaw

Me too, actually.

I almost asked if he'd meant "those people." [;)]

Look Kaliko loves your writing and practically had a fit when she thought I'd had a go at you, but "addition to pontificating" doesn't make a lick of sense.

Okay, now you're both idiots. "These" is the plural of "this". "Those" is the plural of "that". Are you having trouble understanding?

dcnovice -> RE: understand transgendery thing (6/4/2016 9:48:55 AM)

Typo, alas. I left out the "c".

Senior year of high school, I had the choice between taking typing or computer science. The latter sounded much cooler.

So I learned to program in BASIC, which I last did in 1981, and I've never learned to type, which I do daily and badly.

Ah, youthful choices. [:)]

Awareness -> RE: understand transgendery thing (6/4/2016 9:51:50 AM)

*drily* Yes, fair point. Nobody here has an addiction to pontificating, except me.

Thank you, Muse! That's very kind of you to say. [:)]

To be honest, I claim no expertise on transgender issues, but I was able to rustle up what may be some helpful resources.

I feel a bit like LuckyAlbatross! Anyone else remember her?

Yes. :)

I think I recall her being especially good at finding relative Collarchat threads, also. Unless I'm confusing her with someone.

WhoreMods -> RE: understand transgendery thing (6/4/2016 2:18:30 PM)

You don't have to pastiche the language of the King James Bible to get modded. Have you not read any of the mod announcement placeholder threads?

dcnovice -> RE: understand transgendery thing (6/4/2016 2:34:41 PM)

Oops! Posted in wrong thread.

Sigh.

I dont understand this transgendery thing.

Boy is boy which is xy.
Girl is girl which is yy.
<snip>
Sereously what is the problem here?

Females are XX, not 'yy.' (The male-determining "Y" chromosome is actually a truncated "X" where one leg is missing DNA material which only females inherit.)

Another typo to accompany the plethora of your numerous other misspellings? Approximately half of which should either automatically get auto-corrected while composing posts or else get flagged with a squiggly red line for you to manually correct.

This would appear to be the real mystery.

He doesnt appear to understand many of them himself.

The best introduction to and explanation of transgender that I have come across is "Gender Outlaws" by Kate Bornstein.

My experience is that the so-called 'scientific' or 'medical' literature on the topic is next to useless. I say that after ploughing through large portions of it.
