"Today a group of students at Yale walked out of an English modern literature class and pronounced that they were going to boycott whiskey, in protest of 'the fact that one cannot read an English spy novel with out the protagonist in such novels somehow finding himself in an office in the upper floors of a Downing Street building where someone behind the desk pulls out a bottle of whiskey and starts pouring it into two tumblers, in discussing and deciding matters of grave concern to the nation. In many novels, this happens multiple times throughout the day, especially in the midst of deep crisis.'

One student added; 'there was one book, or maybe two or three, where we had to witness Churchill drinking his whisky in the bath tub. As students who only drink beer, or sometimes wine, while in the tub, we find this practice deplorable. It is blatantly anti-German and anti-French, not mention anti-Russian, because of there never being any vodka.'

A local bartender was asked his opinion on the matter. 'What, those kids are bitching about that? That's what they get for taking English lit, all I can say. They should read some Irish lit dudes, like that Joyce guy, or something. That Leo Bloom guy, he was drinking pints the whole morning, day, and night, and it wasn't whiskey. Just good old beer, like they buy here'."

You're seriously offering Robert Burns as a member of the canon? I believe I said Robert Burns blergh (disgust, not very good at all, the dry heaves etc) he talked in words even I have difficulty in understanding to this very day and his words were uttter shite imo. Do not put words in my mouth I am on an anti sophistry drive ere and there. So as you did so I will also introduce you to the cannon and for thee I have stoked it with the irate, ravenous, Scottish midge.

Now I got Arthur Miller school English-curriculum - O grade, o level or whatever they call then nowadays. A piece of cow pat crusty on the outside seems harmless enough till you stand on it and the sheer stench that sticks with you forever, and ever, and one can not easily wash off. So I may whine about that's what my teacher chose for our class, from the available choices of literary giants on the approved curriculum. And she chose the utter piece of shitery.

My uncle, we talk about this and that and stuff, him a retired lecturer, of the science malarkey barely 22 years older, they got Geoffrey Chaucer

Now for those, not aware of this and that, that's what they gave us to read/examination upon 13-15 year oldes. He argues I got of lightly. i argue a piece of shit is a piece of shit but few people at 13-15 can comprehend Chaucer...let alone universities or colleges or whatever they are called now

No doubt humans had become more stupider, benign, apathetic from his generation to mine.

What do they get to read the generation after me I wonder - probably still Shakespeare and kung fu panda 3

Arthur Miller's a perfectly good playright, and as a playwright, not directly comparable to the Chaucer, who was a poet.
And frankly, if you have trouble following either, you have no business studying English literature in the first place.

As the course these halfwits at Yale have been pissing and moaning about is a modern literature class, expecting a few token women and ethnics on the syllabus isn't that unreasonable. On the other hand, that what sounds suspiciously like an Ian Fleming is being taught on a literature does seem a bit off, so at least the asshats are complaining about the right novel.
